First thing that came to mind was people who changed their in-tank fuel pump under the bed of their pickup truck, without removing the tank or the bed !

We should all feel blessed with the 996....my 991 access is only from the bottom....even changing the airfilter requires the bumper to be taken off ,,☹️

I used the think like Quad that the Boxster was easier/faster for common repairs, but now I prefer the 996 like TEX.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Doing the engine mount on the boxster is a bit of a pain, but its still not hard.
I have a 2001 cab. I also install convertible tops and upholstery for a living. I wondered, is there a way to access the top of the engine by removing panels in the rear? It seems this may be an obvious question but... here goes anyway.
I don't think so - uni-body design... It's all steel in front of the engine. I think it would be a major fire hazard otherwise...it would also have a negative impact on chassis stiffness (which is already a liability in a convertible).
^^ Ha! Yes, for sure... I have seen people make access panels for such situations, but not from the factory I'm afraid...see here:

I had a Ford Taurus wagon years ago that had the fuel pump in the tank, and it was under the passenger side rear seat. You popped the seat bottom out, and there was an access panel with 6 screws that you took off, and there was the fuel pump!
Yep, they sure did.
Having access to the top of the Boxster motor is really nice, but that small hole for front access is just not enough.
All in all, I prefer the 911 rear engine access and engine lowering access from above over the Boxster above access panel and front access panel.
It sure would have been nice it they had put some removable panels behind the seat that would have allowed rear and top access similar to the Boxster.
But with my rollbar, they would not be easily accessible, so there's at least that for me to consider too.

Interesting, in terms of access, I'd take the boxster all day every day over a 996. For common repairs, its just way easier. AOS, easier Water pump/thermostat, easier, belt/pullies, easier spark plugs, easier, etc etc.
I have both the 986 and 996.
I used the think like Quad that the Boxster was easier/faster for common repairs, but now I prefer the 996 like TEX. It has to do with physical condition. The awkward contortion needed to work on the Boxster through the access behind the seats (like a water pump) is much more taxing physically than a 996.
The only thing that's particularly difficult on ^^that^^ list is the AOS. The spark plugs are a little "involved" but not difficult. While that front access panel on the Boxster looks nice/convenient, it also looks like it doesn't really give you access to much besides the alternator, a couple pulley's and the serpentine belt... Looks like a nightmare to me !
I'm sure in conjunction with the top access, once you've worked on them and learned the tricks it's not bad, but that's the way I feel about the 996 too...
I guess I just view the boxster as needing to remove less stuff to get to critical parts (or avoid working around them).
For example. Boxster spark plugs...jack car up, remove two screws to get wheel well trim out of the way, and your access is great. On a 996, you have to either remove the mufflers or work around them.
Water pump on boxster is removing front cover and undertray and its right there. I believe on 996, bumper has to come off or you have to mess with the engine support.
Clutch..on the boxster, you drop the cross braces, unbolt the exhaust and its right there in your face. Tons of the room. No worrying about trans tunnel.
Aos...nuff said
Removing intake? takes 20 minutes on the boxster with full top access.
I dunno, I've spent enough time bent over under the engine covers of 911s, and I have to say, the access on the boxster is tremendous. Only thing I'll give you is engine mounts. Doing the engine mount on the boxster is a bit of a pain, but its still not hard.
