He is not inexperienced, and properly tightened the filter, so I am very doubtful its an install error.

And to really check things out, might have to remove the oil pressure sender and hook up a real gauge to see what the oil pressure is.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Fortunately , this is not about my car, but I have a friend with a 3.4 that installed a spin on filter adaptor a last year. For the second time in a year, it actually blew the 0-ring out of the spin on filter and dumped its oil on the ground. Both times were on a cold engine, first a less than a mile from home, second time just moving the car in the driveway. The two episodes were almost a year apart, and aside from these incidents, the car runs great. He is blaming the adaptor, but it seems to me something must be wrong to build that much pressure. He is not inexperienced, and properly tightened the filter, so I am very doubtful its an install error. He did check the relieve piston and spring on the bottom of the pump and all was good. Any ideas?

POST 4Original post

Does the oil pressure gauge show high pressure? After the filter it looks like the oil goes to the cooler. A blockage there could build up pressure.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not sure. Engine is actually in a Boxster so not sure it even has a gauge

POST 6Original post

I've never heard of that happening, especially with a 0-40 W oil. In fact, I've never heard or seen that happen on any car. Two suspects here, the spin on oil filter adapter is not installed correctly, or there are two gaskets on the oil filter, one stuck on the adapter and one on the new filter. Are you saying that the O-ring that seals the spin on oil filter adapter is getting blown out of the filter housing, or the oil filter seal is blowing out? What type of spin on oil filter?

POST 7Original post

If it's the filter oring he is putting oil on the ring before install...right? How long after filter changes are the failures occurring?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've never heard of such a thing either, but it's now happened twice. Napa filter, no double o-ring, and filter, to the best of my knowledge, had been on there for some time before incident/incidents. Definitely not just after an oil change. I'm assuming he wet the ring, as he's not a rookie at this, but can't confirm. I have put one of these adapters on my car and can't image how you could get it wrong. It either threads on, or not. As I said, this is not a rookie either, so cross threading or such is not the case. In fact the adapter looks like brand new. It seems like a lot of pressure to blow the ring out. I saw the first one and the ring was visibly hanging out the side of the filter in one spot. My concern is, if it can't blow the ring out (going back to stock cartridge), what will blow next to relieve the pressure?

POST 9Original post

It seems that if the oil pressure is that high you would see other signs, like blown cam plugs, weeping valve covers, a lot of exhaust smoke due to blow-by in the cylinders, oil coming out of other areas of the engine. This just doesn't make sense. Tell him to buy a different oil filter brand. I use a M1-107 filter on my spin on filter adapter. Going back to the stock type filter is a good way to test. And to really check things out, might have to remove the oil pressure sender and hook up a real gauge to see what the oil pressure is. My guess is there is a problem with the oil filter installation. Maybe he is just not getting the filter "tight" enough and normal pressure is pushing out the seal? I'm still thinking that the seal we are talking about is the flat seal on the oil filter? Not the spin on filter adapter O-ring...right? Oh, and the oil filter I use has a ridge around the outside of the filter seal, so when it is fully seated there is no way that seal is going to get pushed out.

POST 10Original post

Hey Joe, tell him to go to the local parts store and buy a manual oil pressure gauge. A Sun or equivalant, and a fitting ( I think it's a M12 or M14) and temporarily install on the valve cover (opposite one from the oil light switch). The maximum oil pressure (controlled by the pressure relief valve in the oil pump is 5 bar (72.5 psi) ), I wouldn't worry even if it were up to 80 psi cold. I have seen spin on filters rip the metal seam apart, but it takes about 130 psi or more to do it...(stuck relief valve)...

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone. I will pass along. I’m sure he has an oil pressure gauge, so shouldn’t be an issue.
