Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

2002 996: Replaced the top pulley for a worn bearing, but the tensioner pulley (below right) sits back about 5mm, so the belt rides out a little bit.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2002 996: Replaced the top pulley for a worn bearing, but the tensioner pulley (below right) sits back about 5mm, so the belt rides out a little bit. It's riding in the middle on the other two like it's supposed to. Any ideas as to the cause? Is it possible some earlier wrench in prior ownership forgot to install the spacer for that pulley? Other ideas welcomed. Thanks.
Are either of the pulleys the inexpensive plastic ones? I found that they are cross refferenced to work but they just dont fit right. I went with the steel pulleys and the alignment was corrected.
It's actually one of the metal ones. I've just seen in the PET diagram there is a spacer that should be in place on the back of the pulley bolt and I'm wondering if it's missing. Can't determine why it would otherwise sit back so far and the belt ride out on the pulley like it is. With the tension on the belt, it's not like the belt could "jump" the pulley on its own. It stays in line with every other pulley it winds around. And we installed a new belt as well.
@X51
What did you end up doing here? I'm having the same exact problem, but I have the plastic pulleys with the 997 part numbers.
@De Jeeper
The only metal pulleys I can find online say they are for automatic transmission 996s. I'm leaning towards using the plastic pulleys but adding a properly sized washer behind the pulleys to align them.
It sounds like you've encountered a slight alignment issue with the tensioner pulley on your 2002 996. A misalignment of the tensioner pulley could indeed be due to a missing spacer or washer. Check if there should be a spacer in place to ensure the correct alignment. Additionally, inspect for any signs of wear or damage that might be affecting the pulley's position. Sometimes, minor adjustments or shims might be necessary to achieve proper alignment. If unsure, consulting a mechanic or referring to the vehicle's manual could provide further insights.
