Can I get some Targa owners insite on how they use the Targa for a daily driver or things they have discovered with them?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well the point has come that its time to get back into a 911, with my car selling soon. I am currently looking at 2004 Targa with 68k miles and trackable service history and recent 60k service from Hennessy Porsche in GA. Dealer has no proof of IMS done, but with the service history it has, looks it has been taken care of well. That being said, there has been 7 owners and and an accident reported: were there was a rear-end collision, damage to right side, funcational damage but no airbags deployed and clean title. I was looking for a coupe with the aero kit, and than some decent cabs came up with aero options, minus wing. I decided on the Targa as I feel it has the best of both worlds for a larger sunroof and the ability to add the taco tail. The Targa itself is lightly optioned with the following: BASE Porsche Base Model 411 18" Lt Alloy Carrera Wheel, 446 Wheel Caps with Colored Crest, 680 Bose High End Sound Package, AH Black Full Leather,M6A Black Mats - Porsche lettering,P15 Power Seat Package ,X1 Arctic Silver Metallic I was looking for one with heated seats option as well, but its not a deal breaker. I have noticed that the aftermarket aero parts use to be all over and it seems now the there are few who offer the kits and the prices of course have jumped up. I would only be adding the side panels and the taco tail. Can I get some Targa owners insite on how they use the Targa for a daily driver or things they have discovered with them?

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

This is the end goal of what I want the targa to look like, its for city driving and to enjoy the 911 again

POST 3Original post

The hatch is helpful with fixed back buckets. not sure I like the miss matched Aerokit you are going for, but thats just my thoughts. Targa is a great open air option without the convertible aesthetics. Mine is open 90% of the time.

POST 4Original post

The 996/997 targa is the most practical 911 ever made. Excellent daily driver and errand runner. Fabulous weekend or longer distance tourer. You pay a small weight penalty over the coupe for all that practicality. The sunscreen covering the targa roof on the 996 is pretty porous and the interior can get pretty hot; fortunately the easy solution is to get a 997 sunscreen and install it. That's all generic targa stuff. You still need to be comfortable with your particular car. Good luck, and let us know what happens!

Very good I like to see the Aero kits on the targa, in my op the taco is the best aero tail 2nd best to the 997 aero...Gen 2 996 aero just doesnt do it for me....

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok today is the day to pull the trigger, called uo Porsche Hennessy and they said they Targa had all green check marks on the PPI they did when they got the car a few months ago. The dealer that has it now quoted me $800 to $1200 to ship from SC to Az..... On the phone he kept talking about the calls he got on it and everyone asked the IMS lol He said the forums were the ones to make a big deal about it Anyways the sales guy keep going on and on about the car and I thinking yeah man I want ok you can stop talking....Than he changes the shipping to $1400 He is making a bill of sale as we speak and going to get a shipping quote, he said $1400 just to be safe.... Its been a while since I have shipped a 911 to me, what rates are you guys seeing? BTW the dealer is Southern Motor Company North Charleston, South CarolinaNorth Charleston, SC

POST 8Original post

NC to AZ? I'd say that is a quote for uncovered transport.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok Guys I am back in a 911, just paid $35k total taxes and fees for the following Targa and its being delievered on Monday 16th or Tues 17th.... https://www.southernmotorcosc.com/vd...eston-SC-29405 I am super excited to be part of the IMS, Bore scoring group

POST 10Original post

The seven previous owners and the CarFax not specifically showing regular oil change would hold me back, but it is really good looking. The high end Bose system is amazing. Drop a Montel Jordan CD in there and turn up the bass. I paid $1200 for covered transport from Chicago to CT in 2021, just for reference. I'm sure it is higher now. I'm hoping for your sake that it needs a clutch, so you can use the opportunity to update the IMS bearing. Less painful that way. Otherwise, enjoy the crap out of it and send pictures when it arrives.

POST 11Original post

The fact the rear window opens on Targas shocks the heck out of other 911 owners.

POST 12Original post

I have its coupe twin, purchased off BAT 15 months ago with 65000 miles, at 70k now. I later discovered the 996 Targa and might have held out for one...they're uncommon. I paid $33700 all in, so you got a reasonable deal. I did have complete and obsessive service history including IMSB Crankcase vacuum was high so I replaced AOS as a precaution. Car was driven conservatively, NO overrevs! I did have to replace clutch, release bearing, and arm. So, about $38k all in. My maintenance routine is annual or 5k oil changes with a Blackstone oil analysis at each change. LiquiMoly 5w40 and a spin-on filter (converted). I felt like the car had more body roll than I liked, even with fresh Bilstein shicks, so I added Eibach swaybars...highly recommended here in the NC mountains. Sounds like a good deal. Enjoy!

POST 14Original post

Congrats @911Dreamer Beautiful car that looks to be in great condition. Good to see all the service records. You can piece together it's service history and see whats been done and when, as well as see what needs to be done. After you have had the chance to review its history, let us know what you find and if you need suggestions. As 996 enthusiasts, we love this stuff.

Thanks I called up Hennessy Porsche North Atlanta, who had just did a PPI about 2 months ago, talked to a nice service guy named Charlie. Said the Targa had a lot of green check marks, when he pulled up the documents He would be willing to send them over to me, if I could show proof of ownership. I am in the process of getting them. Yeah been on the boards for a while now, so I have already learned a lot and know what needs to be done. When I get it next week I will post more photos and my impressions . PS any leads on the Taco and side skirts, would be much appreciated

POST 16Original post

Congrats! Targas are cool. There used to be a ton of them, made in the late 80s. I had one and loved it. They are back with the 992, and to me, looks really good. I hardly see the 996 targa, so I think they are even more cool because they are a tad obscure.

POST 17Original post

I just picked up and '02 last week in FL (drove home to TN). 92K miles, 6 speed. Love it. Enjoy! Photo from road trip home, sorry so big

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys want to hear something funny on my Drive back from LA....I-10 east.....low and behold was a 996.2 coupe with a lady driving it back to Az (Az plates)...I was in awe how low and great angles the 996 has from the rear, side and front....I pretty much followed the 996 from Coachella to Blythe, were I pulled off to get gas and some food... I may get flack for this, but that lady didnt seem to care about IMS or other issues that are brought up on these boards as she just drove and made me feel much better that the 996 was flawless in 99 degree weather and this 6 hour drive....I am more impressed now and glad I got my 996....Now the wait is for mine to get here Mon or Tuesday

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hmmmm so the sales guy told me this morning that my Targa was supposed to be delivered today around noon, said he called the driver, after I asked for an update. Driver just called and said he is still in Albuquerque, NM and might get to me till next morning. He said he hasnt talked to anyone today....
