Ideally, you want an LN Engineering Solution, but second choice would be retrofit and then check with the LN Engineering website to see if the bearing is registered.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

23 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys first post as I try to step into my first Porsche. Taking baby steps so looking at a 2003 996. First question is maybe weird but Im buying for the purpose of weekend driving and hitting the twisties. Should I have any concern aggressively driving mountain roads in a 20 year old car? Second question is price. Ive found a 2003 silver/black Carrera with 39k miles, one owner, no accidents, all documentation, IMS bearing and clutch replaced, for $30k. I will have to drive 10 hrs to get it, which is fine if the price and car is right. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. Proceed with extreme caution.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19050274

ok, I catch the sarcasm which also answers my question so thanks

POST 4Original post

Sounds good. If you have all the documentation, what IMS bearing did it get replaced with? That matters.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19050377

thank you I will check the documentation. I assume I want a LN Engineering replacement?

POST 6Original post

My 2-cents, age of the car matters less that the condition of said car. On ANY car, you'll want to make sure you have good tires and brakes. Any older car will eventually need some suspension refresh (shocks, bushings in various control arms, etc ). Our engine does have known failure points, but they aren't that common despite forum amplification, and none of them seem to be caused by driving it more or pushing it hard. So, do your research on those (IMS bearing and bore scoring), and if you're comfortable with that, then check the car, buy it, but drive like you stole it.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 19050274

I agree. The car is an unfamiliar car 20 years old with no idea about its true condition. If the car is something you are series about, then pay for a complete pre-purchase inspection at a local shop that knows these cars. The owner should not have an issue with this and if he does, this is probably not your car. Even then, passing the inspection only improves the likelihood that it will serve well. 20 years is a long time and you should have a slush fund for the unexpected. If all goes well, join the Porsche Club of Americxa and check in with your local chapter. I highly recommend attending some autocross events. It's the safest way to learn how to drive your car without putting you and your car at risk. It's fun, too.

POST 8Original post

In general you should have absolutely no issue having fun on the twisties in a 20 year old 996. A pre-purchase inspection is a very good idea. As others have said, build trust and familiarity with the car first. Knowing about trailing throttle oversteer isn't a bad idea either. $30K seems like a decent starting point but what do I know? Ideally, you want an LN Engineering Solution, but second choice would be retrofit and then check with the LN Engineering website to see if the bearing is registered. If it the retrofit option or a bearing from anyone else, you will have to factor in replacement costs.

POST 10Original post

I like most of the folks on this forum are 996 advocates that being said my comment to most of the buyers I talk with is “don’t just buy a 996 buy the right 996” as these cars age, like all Porsches, maintenance history becomes fundamental to the consideration, as mentioned a PPI is helpful but does not guarantee the future needs as it is more of a snapshot of current condition. I don’t think there is a better entry point into Porsche ownership today then the 996, but as mentioned I too am a 996 advocate who owns 6 variations of the 996 😀 Enjoy Rich

Well, there is always a new car, but it requires deeper pockets.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the answers. Still working on this deal. Trying to nail down the IMS paperwork and a couple other minor details. Older gentleman driver who is a pleasure to speak with and I get the impression the car was maintained with an open checkbook. Clutch was done when IMS was done as well.

POST 15Original post

Canyon driving can and likely will kill your AOS, but theres a solution

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19062888

And what is the solution?

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 19062905

2 options, 3 actually: (1) Replace the AOS with another factory until you ruin that one. (2) Upgrade to a Porsche Motorsport AOS (3) Upgrade to the Ultimate AOS made by @Porschetech3

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bought the car. Started a new thread about that.

pull the plug typically means turning something off such as life support. I think you meant pull the trigger which is the start of something. if you are indeed saying should I pull the plug on this. I dont think you should pull the plug. But your title and use of it probably means you are better served looking for Yugos.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought the car. Not sure how misusing a phrase equates to driving a Yugo. Everyone else that responded seemed to to have the mental capacity to understand what I meant. But thanks for the correction. It was deserved. The insult to a total stranger - not as much.

Agree and apologies. Funny how forums can make you lose your mind from time to time. Ill own how stupid my post was, sorry for the tone and welcome to club Porsche. Its an adventure and addicting. I also think you will find most folks pleasant and eager to meaningfully contribute should you ever have any questions or issues. Im far from a veteran, and I have found the forums to be very helpful on the ongoing trials and tribulations of owning a 996. 🍻

The Forums can certainly drive you crazy from time to time..I personally thought the Yugo reference was funny, is that something I need to get checked out? Anyways, welcome to the crazy Club 996 !!! The crazy has just begun ...enjoy !!
