Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Changing the stroke is much more difficult because of the placement of the hole in the cylinders on bank 2 used for installation of the piston pins.
Leading evidence: 'Use installation of the piston pins' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check heads' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Be sure to check the heads for possible cracks and loose valve seats.

He did mention that he found some metal fragments in an oil change and changes the oil that didn't mitigate the ticking sounds.

So rather than gamble on running the motor and potentially causing more damage we decided to pull the motor.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A little more than a month my brother and I both 996 owners were looking for a project now that my 85' 928S is on the road. So we came across the 2000 coupe with 86k in Zenith Blue pictured below which was exhibiting a ticking sound that the PO didn't have the time or resources to investigate or fix. He did mention that he found some metal fragments in an oil change and changes the oil that didn't mitigate the ticking sounds. So rather than gamble on running the motor and potentially causing more damage we decided to pull the motor. We pulled the engine and trans two weekends ago and this weekend we started on engine disassemble to get a better idea of it's internal issues. The cams and other internal components look pretty good. We found considerable bearing wear on piston one and minor on a few of the others. Also, many of the cylinders appear to show early bore scoring evidence. So we'll need to get the crank to a local machine shop that has 911 experienceto have it checked out and decide if we want to stay at 3.4 or go with some of the 3.6 3.7L options? Thoughts?
few of some of the internal engine pics.
Looks to me that you need to recondition the cylinders because they do show who we scoring. You can increase the bore size to increase displacement. Changing the stroke is much more difficult because of the placement of the hole in the cylinders on bank 2 used for installation of the piston pins. Also, the cam chain wear pads in the first photo look like they need replacement. Be sure to check the heads for possible cracks and loose valve seats. Hoffman Automotive is the leader in 996 head reconditioning. good luck with your build.

Did you not investigate the noise before pulling the engine?
The cylinders are not perfect, but they hardly ever are at 90K miles...and they are not bad enough to cause a tick....but there is a lot of carbon on the top of the piston that is probably tapping the head and causing the noise...The piston comes right to the top of the block and the thickness of the headgasket is what separates the piston from the head...It doesn't take very much carbon build up to make the piston tap the head...
While you are in there you may as well upgrade to some better cylinders ( Nickies) some bigger pistons, and new chains, bearings, and timing components..ect..
You will have a better engine in the end, and will have learned a lot...
Thanks for the input and suggestions. Agreed we're definitely going to get the bores freshened up or possibly enlarged and will also be looking at chains, tensioners and all other important parts while we're in there. We bought this to learn about the interior working of the flat six engine and what makes it tick 'no pun intended". I think the bearing wear contributed to the ticking sound as #1 had some play in it prior to removing from the carrier. I'll post a few pics of the bearing to show the wear this evening.

I have never heard a complaint from anyone that bumped their 3.4 to a 3.8 . Myself included . And nikasil is the way to go . Do it once , do it right and enjoy driving it .
