Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

There shouldnt be an oil leak after an oil change unless they are not doing it right (not replacing the o-rings and crush rings, or splashing oil all over the place).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am looking to purchase a 2002 996 with about 80k miles. Owner reports a slight oil leak after oil changes. Any ideas on what could cause this?

There shouldnt be an oil leak after an oil change unless they are not doing it right (not replacing the o-rings and crush rings, or splashing oil all over the place). Or else its just a coincidence.

POST 3Original post

Ask him to describe where the oil is coming from. If the skid plate under the engine isn't removed, it's quite common for oil to collect and drip off for a couple of days.

POST 4Original post

Exactly what Mike Murphy said. Unless there is a leaking seal somewhere else and the only time the oil level reaches that point, it leaks out the seal until the level drops enough for it to stop leaking? IMS bearing seal? In either case, something is wrong and also what sublimate said: where is the leak under the car?

A thorough PPI should be able to tell you.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the comments, guys. I would definitely get a pip and look specifically at the leak issue.
