Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've had my 996 about a month and have noticed the coolant temp drops AT LEAST 5 degrees F with the AC running. I live in Houston, so heat is always an issue and we always keep an eye on coolant temp. Previous owner noted this coolant temp drop as well when the AC is on. Has anyone else experienced this delta? Typical for 996s??

POST 2Original post

The reason is the radiator cooling fans come on by default whenever a/c is on. You should make sure your low and high cooling fan speeds are working. Easiest way is with a Durametric. If your low speed fans arent working (common and due to old/bad ballast resistor) youd see a more significant temp drop with the a/c on, as it will kick on the low speed fans independent of coolant temp.

POST 3Original post

Same thing as in most cars. Cooling fans generally come on (unless engine driven fan) when ac is turned on. Ultimately though, I have to figure that the heat load from the condensors and ac compressor engine load will ultimately result in higher engine temps, but initially there would be a temp drop.

....it's kinda crazy, ive never seen anything like it. My coolant temp will drop by a minimum of 5 degrees and often times it's closer to 10 degrees. From 190F or wherever its peaked at, then always down to 180F and sits there. I haven't seen it go back up but will keep an eye on it.

Yes, but zero airflow across those radiators results in zero engine cooling. So even with the AC on, adding to the heat load, more airflow is better, still. Unless youre driving down the highway at 55mph+ of course.

Yep. Keep in mind, though, the engine is still not very hot. It can and will get up to well past 200F and thats still not that hot. High speed fans come on at 215F. One good thing about having lower coolant temp is that oil temp will also be lower.
