I replaced the Water pump in December and decided to run the car for a couple of thousand miles then do another coolant change and adding a new thermostat at the same time.
Leading evidence: 'Replace water pump in december and decided' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace thermostat, the needle' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. I used MotoRad which I obtained through RocK Auto on-line.

Suggestion
Before I changed the thermostat, the needle on the temp gauge would be up in the middle of the 0 and maybe a little past the 0 on hot days.

Suggestion
The only way to get the oil temp up higher is to run the car hard for a bit.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was able to remove the valve assembly/temperature element from the leaky casting and install it on the old aluminum casting I had removed and, voila, no more leak and the car runs nice and cool with the temperature gauge needle resting on the 1 of the 180 mark.
Hello All,
I have tried doing a search to find the answer to this question. And that is, a 170 degree or a 180 degree thermostat Apart from the 10 degrees, what is the difference? and is there a brand that anyone would recommend?

I'm sorry if this subject has been discussed many times before. Also I live in Florida so the temps here get rather high.
01 Tip.
Thanks for your help in advance.
I am not going to recommend to you which thermostat to use, but I will offer my experience so that you may perhaps judge which one not to use. I recently installed low temperature 160 degree thermostats in my 986 Boxster and 996 Carrera. I used MotoRad which I obtained through RocK Auto on-line. The Carrera installation went fine, however, the Boxster installation not so much. Brand new, out of the box thermostat leaked at the housing where the large hose outlet meets the mounting plate. There apparently was a porosity in the aluminum casting. I was able to remove the valve assembly/temperature element from the leaky casting and install it on the old aluminum casting I had removed and, voila, no more leak and the car runs nice and cool with the temperature gauge needle resting on the 1 of the 180 mark. Before I changed the thermostat, the needle on the temp gauge would be up in the middle of the 0 and maybe a little past the 0 on hot days. Any way, that was my experience with MotoRad. You, sir, are free to draw your own conclusions. Best of luck.
Thank you all for your reply's to this thread.
Looks like there is a special tool to remove and insert the new Thermostat to the casing or should I just go for a new casing as well?
Again, Thank you for helping me out.
I didn't need a special tool when I removed the 160 degree thermostat's valve and temperature element for the leaking housing and installed it on the old good housing. I placed two long screws in a vise and pressed against the two tabs and turned, releasing the lower spring tension. Installation was the reverse, just be sure each tab is captured by its pedestal equally and that the valve disc is centered and you're good.
very simple to swap thermostat insert. I put the neck in a vice (gently) and just use two flat head screwdrivers to push down on the tabs and rotate. Install is reverse. Piece of cake.
What's the benefit going with a lower-temp thermostat, and are there any drawbacks?
From what I've read, it's important to get the 911's engine up to at least 212F periodically to burn off contaminants that can cause premature oil degradation. The thing is, in a casually-driven car, the oil temp usually mirrors the coolant temp pretty closely. Meaning that if the car has a 180F thermostat, oil will hover around that during "normal" driving, and if it's got a 160F thermostat, the oil will also be about 20F cooler. The only way to get the oil temp up higher is to run the car hard for a bit. (An exception would be a car like my B8.5 S4, which seems to have a thermostatically controlled oil cooler and can get the oil up to and above 212F when the coolant is ~200F. AFAIK, the 911 isn't so-equipped, but correct me if I'm wrong.)
So does whatever the benefit is of the 160F thermostat offset the potential accelerated degradation of engine oil quality due to it running too cool?
All it does is open sooner, it doesn't cool the temp down by 20 degrees. You'll find your car will run a few degrees cooler, the gauge between the 1 and 8 rather than 8 and 0 at the 180 mark. An advantag is getting cooler coolant to a few internal hot spots quicker, which should help the engine last longer.
