Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

19 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Once upon a time, my wife's DD was a base 986. She loved the car but lost it a few years ago. A distracted driver hit her while she was waiting at a stop sign. I was hoping the car could be repaired since it was a low speed accident but the other driver's insurance totaled the car. It only had 60k miles! I eventually picked up a low mileage E46 M3 to replace her 986. She LOVES the M3 but always tells me how much she misses the 986. Without mentioning anything to her, I put my plans in motion to get her back into a 986. During my search, a 996 cabriolet became available and I made my move. I brought it home and she's falling in love with the 996. I thought to myself, "Perfect. I can get her back into a Porsche." Unfortunately, she has her own plans. She told me the 996 can be her new DD and the M3 can be her weekend car (it has more storage space for when she goes shopping). The only reason the 996 was in our garage was because I parked my car at my buddy's spot so I can work on the 996. She asked me if I could just leave my car at his spot. I know if I leave it anywhere except my own garage, I will hardly drive it because of the hassle. Now here's the dilemma. I'm really having fun working on the 996 and there are quite a few mods I want to install. I can't keep my car at my buddy's past this weekend. I'll need to find another garage or sell something. If you made it this far in my story, I'm still stuck. I haven't decided what to do but figured this is the best place to vent about this sickness. -- J

POST 2Original post

Great story and a fantastic wife to appreciate a Porsche your dilemma is easy sell the m3 and have her make more trips shopping if you can’t fit it all in one trip upgrades should be preemptive for longevity not sport

POST 3Original post

Let me tell you a story of my own: Once upon a time I purchased a very nice 99 Boxster Base in Arctic White with a Black interior. Low miles, 5 speed manual, loved that car! The Boxster made me start noticing the 996, so I purchased a 99 C2 Cab, Ocean Blue Metallic with a Saddle interior. Low miles, 6 speed manual, love that car! Only problem was I only have a 2 car garage already occupied by a 78 Alfa Spider which I had restored, and a 69 E-Type Jaguar driver which was undergoing a rolling restoration. Loved those cars! But it was bothering me that the 2 Porsches were sitting outside in the weather, so I sold the Alfa and the Jaguar in order to garage the 2 Porsches. The saying goes, "You're only young once, but you can be immature forever.", so I bought a 2001 Harley Davidson Road King to re-live my youth, but now I had to jockey vehicles to get the Road King out of the garage. So, I gave the Boxster to my Daughter and Son In Law, and bought a 1989 Harley Davidson Softail to complement the Road King, and now all my toys fit in my garage. The moral of the story is you gotta be flexible!

Great color! Keep it and do not change the wheels. I love 5 spoke wheels 👍

I only disagree with this last point. "Upgrades" should be made to BOTH preempt for longevity AND a to make it your own. 🙂

Thanks for sharing. Motorcycles...one day. Our kids will be driving soon and don't quite fit in the back of a 911 anymore. I was hoping to give one of these cars to them but I'd feel more comfortable if they drive something easier to maintain (and park in a high school parking lot). -- J

POST 11Original post

I must confess that I LOVE the E55 and/or E63s AMG Wagons and am actively on the hunt for one. I've been wrestling with the same thing. My 996 will be done soon and I can't decide who will get cover and who will be relegated to the streets. If I were you, I'd dump the M3 and get a late model Cayenne or Macan. She'll like that better. Then you won't have to decide! See! Easy.

POST 12Original post

What about the driveway? Not ideal b/c it's exposed to the elements, but it looks like you have plenty of space there!

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I don't think this one will be staying in the stable. Turns out my wife misses the way the 986 drives, not the option to drive with the top down. We had a hardtop on the 986 and she liked keeping the hardtop on. I guess I had a better chance if I brought home a 987 or 996 coupe. -- J

I've got a 986 I could trade... Lol. Not close to a fair trade, but I am actively looking for a blue C2 or C4S if you wanted to talk more in detail. Cheers!

POST 16Original post

Not to rain on the idea of swapping a Rennlister for his 986, I can tell you we're a very happy couple with a 986.2 S Boxster (wife's car and (her) preferred foliage cruiser), a 996.2 C4S (my daily driver), and a 958 Cayenne Turbo (wife's winter driver and our usual road trip car - that is, when I can't convince her the 996 is plenty). For my money, I'd sell the 996 cab and get a 996 wide body coupe. Offer to sell your wife's M3 and pick up a clean 2003-2004 Boxster S (glass window and 3.2 L motor for the win!), and do this right. 😉
