Suggestion

There is a big magnet in the bottom of the trans that collects the ferrous metal debris to keep the oil clean....Leaving the seal in place tends to keep small metal particles in the bearing when the seal fails and lets the grease out but will not let oil flow in and out of the bearing and the bearing wears faster.....

Thought so.I’m now starting the process of making sure the pinion gear is set right with the ring gear.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I took apart my broken transmission case and remove the gears. In the process the dust shield on the input shaft race got a little out of shape. Do I have to reinstall the dust shield? When I try to put it back Im not satisfied that it will stay in place.

POST 2Original post

If you are talking about one of the two big bearings in the g96 transmission then NO... The bearings on the other end are even smaller and have no seals on them...
