Suggestion · Original poster

Since the oil is totally self contained inside the engine, I was thinking to fill it with oil, remove the spark plugs, apply 12V to the starter and let it run for 60 second to build up oil pressure and have it distributed everywhere before I install the engine in the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just got done putting together a 996 engine from scratch. Since the oil is totally self contained inside the engine, I was thinking to fill it with oil, remove the spark plugs, apply 12V to the starter and let it run for 60 second to build up oil pressure and have it distributed everywhere before I install the engine in the car. Anything wrong with that idea?

POST 2Original post

The most commonly accepted practice is to start car for a split second and turn off a few times. Its been said the starter cant spin the motor fast enough on its own. If u do try the starter pull the cps plug so the injectors dont fire.

POST 3Original post

A recommendation from a noted engine builder: Start car-immediately shutoff when it fires-start car-immediately shutoff when it fires. Repeat until you see oil pressure on the gauge...so that would be after installed. During assembly there should have been proper amounts of the right lubricant used on moving parts. I've also heard a starter won't spin things quick enough to build oil pressure. No expert here.

Callas Rennsport makes a pre-lube kit. LN sells them here: https://lnengineering.com/products/p...e-kit-epl.html

POST 5Original post

I think before I spend 400.00 on that set-up, I would buy a bug sprayer, a new pressure relief valve cap and compuchek fittings, tap the cap for the compuchek fitting, then charge the oil system with the bug sprayer which is more than capable of providing more than 60 psi. all for less than 50.00. I do like the idea of removing the pressure relief valve and spring and charging the oil system that way.

IMHO, I'd recommend a good break-in oil. And ,I'm assuming you used proper assembly grease and other lubricants instead of building it dry, correct? I wouldn't pull the plugs and crank the engine. Just turn over the engine until it's about to start, then turn off. Repeat once. This should allow ample time to reach proper oil pressure. Now, start as normal. During the initial break-in process keep revs at about 3000 rpm for the first 10-20 minutes. Don't overrev the engine! Remember, not too much and not too little. Some companies recommend pushing it up 6000 rpm and then quickly releasing throttle to set rings. Run the BR oil up to 500 miles and then change out the oil. Again, I would recommend NOT pushing the car too hard during this process. Just my opinion, you might want to reach out to the experts on the FB engine building group and see what they recommend too.
