Thank, but I'd prefer to add shops that have been recommended here on Rennlist.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Everyone,
Within the last few months I was able to pick up a 2003 996. The price was reasonable and I knew that I would likely have to take care of IMS/RMS at some point in the future. The car has 71K miles and I am going to be pro-active in taking care of this.
The question is: can anyone here recommend a good Porsche mechanic in the South Bay Area? I'm in San Jose and have chatted with a couple of shops, but am really interested if anyone here has a good recco. So far, I have been quoted between 3500 - 4000 for the job, which seems high vs. what I have read from others on the forum.
Thanks in advance for the help..... and think of this as a mechanic recco and not "another IMS question" :-)
Best,
Dave
Recently switched to Don Wise from another Indy to work on my 03. No major work done for me yet but he has a long history and my dealings with him make me trust his word and work. Maybe get him to look over your car and get to know him.
@Woodman71 the price does not include a clutch as this is a Tiptronic model (I would have preferred a manual... but this car was such a good deal I was OK overlooking this)
I've heard nothing but good things about Don Wise in Campbell. It's too far from the city to be convenient for me, but if I was any closer I'd definitely go to him.

I know there’s a ton of these threads, but this one looks on point. Looking for a more reasonably priced mechanic around San Jose / South Bay - to work on a fairly cheap recent purchase?
I have BR Racing and Don on my list, but my recent experience they were on the expensive side eg BRR priced out some work at the same price as a dealer.
Also, will be doing IMS most likely - what’s the going rate there nowadays.
Make sure when you talk to a shop, you want your IMSB (Intermediate shaft BEARING) replaced, not the IMS (Intermediate shaft). At least you will appear knowledgeable about your car.
I would give Junipero Serra a call - they are in Daly City . Jimmy and his crew look after my 996 C4, my C2 before it and he has an awesome 993 turbo (@
rohitgarewal)
and a Carrera GT so I would he is more than qualified for both here.

When I called around, BTM and BRR were comparable in price and both less than Don. BTM was booked out a for over a month and BRR could get me in within 2 weeks, so I went there. The tech who worked on my car really appreciated it and drove a 996 himself. For whatever its worth, I'd like to believe that if the person working on your car likes it, they'll probably do a better job taking care of it.
The previous owner did the clutch and IMS bearing on my car back in 2019. $4k

2nd this. They recently replaced my starter Y cable. Came in under the price they quoted by quite a bit. Good guys, clean shop and excellent work
