I use a 1 amp smart Battery Tender with a harness permanently connected to the battery.

I have used the Deltran battery tenders on my two non-winter cars for years with success.

The owner did not drive it much so he used the Porsche branded Battery Maintainer with a 20ft long cord that connects in the lighter receptical.
Use battery tender duo (can do two cars simultaneously)

I bought it based on the recommendation of a friend who owns a 94 911 cab and has used this brand for years (he uses the Mity Mite).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi there,
I did some searching around and did not come up with exactly what I was looking for. I just need a maintainer for winter here in Oregon. I have a 2000 911 with a cigarette lighter and heard I can buy one that hooks up there. I may or may not take the car out if we get some nice days. It is hard to say with winters here in Central Oregon. Can you point me to specific products that will work for my application? I have never done this before as my cars in the past have always been winter driveable
Appreciate any assistance you can provide!
I have my car on a charger/automaintaner that I got from AutoZone. I plug it in the cigarette lighter. I think the brand is Schumann and it cost like $50. You don't need anything fancy, just a regular battery charger and auto maintaner. Been using mine for years now.
This is the one I have and it is perfect for my AGM battery. Since COVID hit, I drive my car one time a week to the grocery store and back home. I got the name wrong - Schumacher. You can get one on Amazon.

I bought this for my 2000 996 (first N.E. winter with the car):
Shumacher Direct Mount
Shumacher Direct Mount
I bought it based on the recommendation of a friend who owns a 94 911 cab and has used this brand for years (he uses the Mity Mite). It connects to the battery terminals. My car goes into storage as soon as the snow and/or road salt flies. Good luck.
This plugs into the cigarette outlet and works great.
My car is only driven once a week or two even during the summer and Ive never had a problem.
You can get one cheaper (without the Porsche logo) from CTEK.
Does the maintainer really do anything if you drive it once a week? I'll put one on during the "southeast winter", which might extend 4-6 weeks depending on temperatures. Never had a problem not using for weekly or bi-weekly drives though.
Thats a great question.
I always leave my 996 in the garage unlocked and plugged into the Porsche CTEK.
Because Im not sure when its being driven again.
It could be a couple of days or a few weeks.
And I figure that it cant hurt.
Black and decker makes one but it looks the same as other generic ones. Plugs into the lighter and there is a cutout on the passenger door to accommodate the wire. Works great for me. I drive mine all winter but still less than during the summer. Locking it saves battery power Im told.
When I bought my 2000 Boxster "S' in 2003 in Portland OR. The owner did not drive it much so he used the Porsche branded Battery Maintainer with a 20ft long cord that connects in the lighter receptical. I still use it every night.
I'm guessing that like myself you got locked out of your 996
because I have MKII with the electric hood and engine cover actuation
after 2 or 3 days - I don't want to guess, I want my car to start
prefer to leave mine unlocked when in the garage ( more draw on battery )
it's just habit now to leave the hood (frunk) unlocked and the CTEK plugged in
100% success
I have CTEK units, MUS 4.3 and MXS 5.0 which is the updated version. I keep my cars on them pretty much all the time they're not being driven. The CTEK models I listed will restore a weak battery if set to do so, but it can take a while. Point being that putting it on a proper charger/maintainer like these for a few weeks should preserve and extend battery life.
This i the one I use. It's been connected for several years and I've gone as long as a month without cranking and the battery is always ready to go!

I use the battery tender duo (can do two cars simultaneously). Its got a quick connector that stays connected to the battery terminals, so you can pop it on and off as needed. Its worked great for the past 5 1/2 years...
Is there such a thing as a maintainer that puts out too little power? I have a Battery Tender Junior on my car. It's the 750mah version, is that too little? It seems to work fine, but would something like the 3 Amp Schumacher one Joe posted be better?
It just depends...my AGM battery has 750 cold cranking amps, so it would take many hours of recharge with the Battery Tender Junior. Also have to factor in the 70 or 80 amps the alternator puts out, drive time, how long the car sits in between drives and so on. What I like most about mine is that it will recharge to 100% and then go into an auto maintain mode, so kind of like having a smart computer recharge and maintain the battery. All I can add is it works great!
The higher the amps in the charger the warmer your battery gets. Heat kills batteries over time. I use a 1 amp smart Battery Tender with a harness permanently connected to the battery. I snake the harness by the windshield when in use. For the winter I take the plastic battery cover off, connect the charger, close the frunk, and let the car sleep for a few months (freakin' long and cold winters in NH!).
This past spring when I started the car for the first time in about 4 months it fired right up as if I just drove it.
If the battery is fully charged, 750mah is fine. My Battery Tender does 1.75 amps to trickle charge, and then switches to 750mah when the battery is fully charged to maintain it. A maintainer is not meant to charge a battery. Its only meant to maintain, which means it offsets the batterys natural tendency to lose energy of time (even when not connected to anything). It also helps offset a very small parasitic loss from the cars electronics.
I've had a Battery Tender Jr. hooked up to the AGM battery on my Camaro for 12 years. The battery finally died this year after 12 years of service. I fully believe the Battery Tender is why it lasted that long. The car only gets driven about once a week on average from March to November.
