Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Last changed 3,000 miles ago (yes, its due for a change, was planned for this weekend) and that was back in April.
Leading evidence: 'Replace 3,000 miles ago (yes, its due' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'shifter cable has come out of the bracket' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check regularly and haven't had' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
It's likely the shifter cable has come out of the bracket on the transmission.

I check regularly and haven't had to add any (I use both the computer reading and the dip stick, both ice cold and warmed up).

My 996 has been running flawlessly, zero issues aside from a poor catalytic converter that I just replaced.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thanks for reading. I have a problem that I can't figure out on my own or easily find a cause or solution. My 996 has been running flawlessly, zero issues aside from a poor catalytic converter that I just replaced. During replacement the oil filler tube broke, which is apparently not uncommon. It's currently duct taped and has caused a couple rough starts due to the vacuum pressure being off. Once warm it runs great. It'll be repaired at my next oil change. So, last week I started it up and reversed out of a spot and went to get on the freeway. It has always had a very easy shifter feel (shifter is stock and the clutch feels great, no issues or changes in pedal pressure or feel). I stopped at a light, put it in neutral. The light turns green and I went to put the car in 1st and it just wouldn't go - it was like all of a sudden the shifter was a broom in a bucket of rocks. I eventually got it in gear but it took an INCREDIBLE amount of effort - like I was going to break it off. I drove there and back (about 10 miles total) and parked it. Reverse basically is impossible to get to. 1st sucks. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th are fine - feels like normal. 5th gear is somewhere in the middle. Its very weird. I haven't driven it since.
I do have a small leak coming from just right (passenger side) of center. Not entirely sure what it is. My oil barely leaks at all. Last changed 3,000 miles ago (yes, its due for a change, was planned for this weekend) and that was back in April. I check regularly and haven't had to add any (I use both the computer reading and the dip stick, both ice cold and warmed up). My coolant needs to be flushed and I've added some distilled water over the last 4 months. It's been extremely hot here in Utah over the summer and we had an early frost and the temps dropped precipitously into the 30s the first week of October. Maybe that temp change caused a leak - no idea. I'm not sure what condition or level the transmission fluid is in. Not sure if that's where my leak is coming from. I don't really have a clue. Can anyone shed some light on this? I'd be happy to include any more info.
Gear shifting: cable ends have come loose. Could be just an easy fix. Could be more involved.
Oil leak: Could be the oil filler tube broke and leaking, could be something else. You just have to investigate.
Coolant flush: One of a more involved job. Get an airlift or suffer the consequences.
