Suggestion

I have akebono on my bmw e46 front - yes cold bite is poor versus oem - but once up to temp - no issues - also very light dust and wear has been much better than the stock rear pads I replaced at same time ...but for my lower miles/year 911 - I would still probably go textar again ...dust is not that annoying, cold feel is good, track performance was fine and wear is ok for the amount I use it (5k/Yr) ....if I was putting on a lot more miles I might consider akebono so not to have to clean the wheels or replace the brakes and rotors as often ...that would be a worthwhile trade for cold bite ...

I'm sure this is like "Whats the best Oil", but I am looking to replace my fron brake pads and was hoping for some recommendations. The car is a 99 C2 used for 95% street driving and 5% track. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks Rick

POST 2Original post

I'm a fan of Hawk HPS pads. Low dust, fairly quiet, good initial bite and great for a street car with some track use. I run/ran them on my 996TT, Murcielagos, Vipers, STIs, M3, etc.

POST 3Original post

Textar is similar to oem (my oem pads I removed said textar on them) at half the cost - good on street and fine for occasional track use -

POST 4Original post

The Endless mx72 has proven to be a great pad among the local autocrossers.

POST 5Original post

I guess you need to define / decide how you are going to use the car. and it is my .02 cents worth the Textar pads are not what I am used to with regards to brake torque

POST 6Original post

Whatever you do, don't get Akebono. They have no dust but also no bite! I got them on my old Benz once and I while I didn't have to clean my wheels for months on end, I was very nervous in LA traffic with those stupid things.

POST 7Original post

Cool Carbons have great bite, but they are friggin' loud. I don't mean an occasional squeak - I mean teeth-grittingly loud every time you stop unless you get them up to temperature. This generally means that instead of braking normally, you stomp on the brake pedal every time in a pathetic attempt to get some heat into the pads.

POST 8Original post

I second the Hawk HPS. Reasonably priced and readily available. I used them on my DD for years. Very little dust, they can handle spirited driving, and they seem to last forever. If you decide to go with these, the part numbers are HB291F.642 front and HB290F.583 rear. http://www.ogracing.com/hawk-hb291f-...d-hps-compound http://www.ogracing.com/hawk-hb290f-...d-hps-compound

I had the exact opposite experience with Akebono pads on my E30 325i and E36 M3. The initial cold bite isn't the world's greatest, but this is in reference of chilly fall and winters in Vancouver but they stop very well otherwise. I had a set of them in my old E91 325i wagon in LA and they were great through and through.

POST 12Original post

I've used Textar pads on the front with good results.

I've been using cool carbon pads on my 2004 996 c2 . I really like them , low dust and great even quiet braking on BC mountain roads especially on the long runs downhill . I fitted sebro rotors and goodridge stainless brake lines at the same time I prefer them to the ebc red pads and oem pads. My car has PSM .

POST 16Original post

+1 on Pagid pads for daily drivers. I also fitted Textar discs when I replaced the pads recently...a great combination for DDs. relinuca

I'm very happy with my Ferodo pads (street and track).

POST 18Original post

Ferodo make good products , I have fitted them to all my motorcycles for years , nothing I've tried is better , I didn't know they made a 996 pad . Where did you get them? Might have to try them next . I'm really happy with the cool carbons but Im a ferodo fan

POST 20Original post

Anyone ever try StopTech pads? I'm getting them installed on the front along with new rotors and a fluid flush. Had Textar pads but ended up boiling my fluid this past weekend at Roebling Road. The pads were getting thin and expected them to be finished by the end of the weekend. Apparently the combo of pads nearing the end and rotors still in spec but now on the thin side, contributed to over cooking my fluid. Nothing like heading into the breaking zone before turn one at 132 mph and your pedal sinks to the floor. Not something I care to experience again. My indie says the StopTechs should be good for combined street / track use. I haven't been able to find much feedback on them.

POST 21Original post

I'm running Power Stop ceramic pads on my Boxster S and they perform great on the street, AX and track It has the same brakes as a C2

Originally Posted by AndyK View Post I have Akebono pads now - not bad at all! Clean, and they stop fine. I second Andy's comment, and I really appreciate the clean wheels. But I am not a track guy, rather one of those folks that love my Porsche as an everyday any weather, go to anywhere daily driver car, with Seattle traffic and hills and wet roads. I agree they have a "soft" initial feel but always give me stopping power when I ask for it. They seem to work well with the stock rotors and are wearing well. And quality and value pricing just add to the reason for a recommendation.

POST 24Original post

I recommend you consider swapping pads between street and track. I use the stock Textar pads for street driving. When I'm going to the track I swap them out for a set of PFC 08s. Granted, I have a two-post lift, but with a floor jack and stands you should be able to swap brake pads in thirty minutes or less once you know how to do it. (I'm not sure what your level of DIY experience is, so forgive me if I'm underestimating you.) Anyway, it is my opinion that anyone tracking their car should be familiar with tending to brakes. So, for me, nice quiet stock pads on the street. Performance pads for the track. By the way, the PFC 08s seem to be playing pretty well with my OEM rotors.

POST 25Original post

I also recommend going with two different sets. If you remove the wear sensors it takes 10 minutes to swap out pads. A good track brake is going to drive you nuts on the streets while a good street brake will have you wishing for something better at the track. On the street I use EBC red which are pretty low dust and do a great job stopping my car in daily commuting duty. There was a period of time when we were moving last year that I didn't wash my car for almost 3 months. My wheels looked a bit filthy but nothing like when I remember from the stock pads after just one week! For the track I use Performance Friction. Don't remember which model # exactly but they're great on the track and don't fade like the stock do. On the street though I've made the mistake of leaving them on and it is embarrassing when your car sounds like a junker when slowing down.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 12620662

Agreed. The first time I changed pads I used zip ties to secure the wear sensors out of the way. If you're tracking the car you should be looking at the pads more than frequently enough that you are the wear sensor and don't need any electronic help with that.
