Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been lurking here for about a year and finally made an account. This is my first post so forgive any missteps. I am pretty versed on the ins and outs of the 996 as well as the 997. I've read some of the buying guides and have been reading lots of info throughout the forum. I have found a 2002 that I am potentially buying and would like to solicit the members here for their opinions. Porsche maintenance costs and intervals is an informed factor and acceptable to me, so I'm looking more specifically for opinions on the actual car and not so much general ownership factors. Note that the car is not local to me so I have not seen it in person yet, but I want all my research done prior to a visit. Here are the details on the car: 2002 Carrera Cabriolet $17K 79K miles Tip Clean title Full service records on hand No apparent accidents or mechanical issues RMS, IMS, Water pump, AOS replaced @ 50K miles (seller provided paperwork) Going to get a PPI done @ the local Porsche of course and a thorough in person inspection since the car is not local to me. From what I can tell, the market value is somewhere around $23-25K, so of course I asked him why so low. Seller stated that he is needing money to close a real estate deal so trying to raise cash fast. If everything checks out PPI, good deal? Comments/opinions and further questions welcomed.

POST 2Original post

Well, I'm always on high alert when someone under prices a car, for whatever reason. Sure, you might encounter the rare car being sold by the widow of a scoundrel of a cheating husband with the proceeds earmarked for the grieving girlfriend but barring that rare as an albino unicorn scenario it is hard to believe someone would price the car thousands under its "market" price just for a quick sale.

POST 3Original post

One does not "sift" through service records to see if IMS has been replaced. Either it's done or it isn't. I have a feeling it's not done. Tip is always cheaper and even more so if critical maintenance is lacking.

POST 4Original post

The tip probably drags down the value slightly, otherwise I think it is priced slightly below market value. Either he''s telling the truth and really wants a quick sale, or there are real or potential issues with the car. A thorough PPI should tell (expect to pay $400 to $500 for that, but it's money well spent IMO). Full service records adds value - go through these to check how well the car has been maintained. Many people here, including me, have bought their 996 unseen - it's not ideal, but it helps to have someone you trust look it over (check with Rennlisters in the area - they can be a very accommodating bunch). Good luck! Hope it works out for you - they are awesome cars. Oh yea - you may want to run the Carfax as well.

In case you haven't seen this: https://rennlist.com/forums/vehicle-...85k-miles.html Also, I'm taking her in to have the preventive maintenance on the water pump, low temp thermostat, coolant flush, serpentine belt tomorrow.

I see you haven't updated the info to show that it has a salvage title now after you drove it in the rain the other day!

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 12616239

LOL. Yes. OP doesn't know yet that you are not supposed to drive it in the rain, use it as a daily driver, or take any long trip more than 50 miles on these.

Another beautiful 996 for sale at a very reasonable price! I am also thinking about putting mine on the market, but I will be asking $27K for a low mileage 2004 996 C2 with lots of nice options. I am in BC, Canada, so I expect out of range for most US buyers (it is a US car, so no problems taking it across the border).

POST 11Original post

Looking at those wheels they seem to have quite a bit of curb rash.Mostly the front left upper.Could be the picture

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12616270

Yea something I was wondering as well. It would appear there is some rash on the rear driver side wheel, but again hard to tell because the quality of the pic is not all that great. The front wheel is definitely a picture quality issue.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Seller faxed me service paperwork. IMS, RMS, AOS and the Waterpump were replaced @ 50K miles. Appears to have been done by the previous owner as he came into the car at 58K miles. He is an elderly gentlemen and says he takes his car to the dealer and wasn't gifted with mechanical know how.

POST 14Original post

If you had the money to consider a 997, why you're going for the cheap option? You should aim for a 996 Turbo or one with two owners well maintained, low miles 996.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12616389

Not sure where it was read I had the money to consider a 997. The OP mentioned I had been reading up on both gens, maybe that did it? Would love a turbo sure! In any case, could I spend more, sure, as one can almost always exponentially increase their spending. In this case, this is around what I want to spend for something I want, so I'm evaluating what's available that is congruent with where I am at currently.

POST 16Original post

Hmm, interested in buying a tip cab. Are you sure it's Mr -Black?

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 12616593

Well "his" profile says female for the gender. So is it a woman trying to fend off the inevitable pack of wild dogs or has Bruce gotten tired of her GT3RS and come among us to move to a 996? I wasn't going to say anything, but as another of Schnelly's alter egos I couldn't leave KC to stand alone here. Ego-unity and all

POST 18Original post

Damn, you're right. I mean, I 'm right, err, Schnelly 's right, err we're right, oh God I'm so confused!

POST 19Original post

You can't call yourself Mr. Black here. That's racist. Looks like a very good deal, assuming the car checks out.

POST 20Original post

Well we are talking the San Francisco area ya know Just saying....

POST 21Original post

To me it seems a bit fishy but if you're willing to take the chance... Dunno too many "elderly" gentleman that needs liquid cash for business deal that late in life. The ones that old usually have the cash and the ones that don't are usually on the younger side. If I had a nickel for every time I heard "liquidate for cash purposes", "church going", "grandma owned", "moving out of country", etc...

You want a head scratcher? Being alters of the same ego, how did I not know you were selling your (my?) car and what does my holding that grudge say about our collective state of mind? Wow, even for the 996 crowd this thread took a sudden and unexpected detour into the weeds...

POST 26Original post

IDK, that seems to be in the ballpark for value and it's not like its' under priced all that much anyway. If it drives too and sounds fine I wouldn't bother with a inspection, however it's not a 6 speed...

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12617179

I definitely share your suspicious nature. I'm pretty much very suspicious no matter what the purchase regardless of price until I have verifiable facts to make a judgement. In any case, it looks like my leisure search will continue because the seller just informed me that he sold the car today. Thanks for all the input and varying opinons peoples.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 12618550

Let's see if a new member of the car registers here in a week or so asking questions to issues he might have. That might make you feel better.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 12618580

On a motorcycle forum I was on years ago someone posted a ad about a vintage bike - pretty much right up our alley, and right up their alley. It took the "forum" 2 to 3 days, along with the person, to come up with all these questions and concerns about the bike, as well as the old guys complaining about how high the price was and how little they would pay (price was going rates if I remember). In that time the seller sold it to someone. So sometimes, although helpful to post and get information, it just takes too long and a person needs to take responsibility to **** or get off the pot themselves.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 12618583

I hear ya. It all depends on the individual and how much risk/gamble they're willing to take. IMO, the best deals out there don't last more than a day. If it does, someone's already looked at it and determined there was something wrong with it(however minor) and passed. The best thing to do in this case is to put a deposit down on it to let the buyer know you're serious which gives you a bit of time to do your research and have a PPI done afterwards if you choose.

POST 32 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12618580

Hah that would be interesting! I'm in no rush to purchase anything at the moment, so waiting for the right deal to walk across my sights is quite alright.
