Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Not to mention; there are really only two problem makers back there; possibly oil cooler and more likely AOS; and if your engines out- replace your AOS now, haha.

Didnt Ferrari do something like this with the 360 so cam belt changes no longer required the engine to come out?

Suggestion
As long as you use a flange plate with a good number of fasteners (steel rivnuts or nut plates secured in the flange would be a good choice) then you'll be fine, and won't be sacrificing much at all in the way of integrity.

Suggestion
As for the 996, I would make an overlapping flange plate that covers the cut out piece and use machine screws with large washers to maintain some integrity.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

While the engine is out, thought it may be an interesting project to cut an entry panel to the back end of the engine for accessing those hard to reach areas of the car. If I do that and frame it back in with a custom bezel and quality NRG threaded bits, what compromise would I be making in exchange for the added access flexibility?
Vantage point is in engine hole. Under the rear deck. It would be a cut just behind the rear seats to a spot well above the intake. Much easier access to AOS, top transmission bolts, clutch slave and oil pressure sending unit.
OH.....could even overlay the opening with a clear, thick poly panel and make it a see through setup. Hmmmmm?
Being as it's a unibody frame I would guess it would severely compromise the structural integrity while introducing excessive flexibility. But I'm not a structural engineer so what do I know?
After seeing the typical surgery depicted in LS swaps, this seems minor -- particularly since the piece will be substituted back in. I share Sanyata's lack of any engineering qualifications, but so far I'm thinking the idea has potential!
Long before the 360. The 308, 328, Mondial family have the cutout in the front of the engine bay, or rear of the firewall top to access the engine. As for the 996, I would make an overlapping flange plate that covers the cut out piece and use machine screws with large washers to maintain some integrity.
I am very near the point of putting the motor back in. If I am going to do it, I need to do it now. Ill drum my fingers and wear a pondering look on my face this week.....
I am a qualified aerospace engineer. As long as you use a flange plate with a good number of fasteners (steel rivnuts or nut plates secured in the flange would be a good choice) then you'll be fine, and won't be sacrificing much at all in the way of integrity.
Also, it's vitally important that you report back with photos and let us all know how you got on. If your idea works well then I think you could start a craze.
It's already been done. I wish I remembered by who, sorry. Just make sure to use some form of gasket material sandwiched (think fumes) between the two pieces.
In one of Samcracs videos of his Ferrari, you can see the access panel behind the seats, fairly roomy to work in all things considering. This was also pretty common in the last-gen f-body to cut access holes above the fuel tank to get to the pump since you had to drop the tank if you needed to get to it.
I would not do it; I know most of us think of these as forever cars or somewhat compromised in value but man; can you imagine trying to explain this a prospective buyer if it ever came to wanting to sell? Not to mention; there are really only two problem makers back there; possibly oil cooler and more likely AOS; and if your engines out- replace your AOS now, haha.
Bank 5-8 Removal/install of the injectors, removal/install of the plugs/wires, setting the tappet clearance, repair of the air injector port bungs, vac hoses on intake, upper flange bolts on AC pump, AC pump clutch asm access. Likely more stuff I'm forgetting.
As jet aircraft age the structure gets cracks, and sheet metal mechanics will add multiple layers of metal over the cracks, this repair is super strong and air and fire tight. A real aircraft sheet metal mechanic could build you an access panel with all the structural and safety features of original.
