New set installed showing the bearings are now on either side of black part instead of just on inner surfaces.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This is an FYI for all owners of the Numeric shifter.
On a saturday morning drive out of the city the shifter felt very loose. Pulling the boot off I could see that the left ball bearing that holds the main lever had completely disintegrated. The lateral slop meant shifting was incredibly imprecise.
I was booked on a 2 day DE even at Spa Belgium the following weekend and this was a game stopper. There's no tech info on Numeric site and finding exact replacement bearings wasn't possible.
I contacted Dan@Numeric who stated that this has been known to happen and that all new shipped shifters have 4 bearings instead of 2 at that point.
He attempted to expedite the new bearing set to me in the UK which should have been perfectly possible from Florida but it never showed up in time arriving on the Monday after DE event. As a back up I managed to source slightly larger outer diameter bearings and modified to fit. I wasn't 100% relying on Numeric as no shifter meant a loss of $900 track time.
The point to this is if you have an older style 2 bearing design I'd get in contact with Dan@Numeric asap to get the newer 4 bearing and longer pin design he now installs on all new shifters.
Don't leave yourself potentially stranded and out of pocket over a $2 part.
Slightly pi55ed at Numeric as I bought direct from them so they know what shifter type I had and this should have been a failure recall or update. Ok, so they sent the new part but this is after the failure, their known failure.
Below is a picture of the distintergrated bearing and the supplied replacement parts.
Old versus new longer pin.

Good post and thanks for the info. How old was your shifter and how much use did it have? I run a Numeric shifter in my car as well and would appreciate to know the bearing replacement to have a spare in my toolbox. Subscribed.
Shifter installed Oct 2013 @ 41500miles, car was on 56400miles when failure occurred. It's a weekend toy only with about 6-8 track events on it since fitting. Numeric state limited life-time warranty...
Very interesting and thanks for taking the time to give others a heads-up. I purchased a Numeric Shifter last year and have yet to install it.
After reading your post I went into the garage and confirmed I've got the 2 bearing setup.
I'll be contacting Numeric for the upgraded bearings and longer pin. A bit disappointed they didn't reach out to prior purchasers once they discovered the failure mode.......go figure!
There is very little load on these bearings and it is in a totally benign environment. You've got to question either the design of the shifter or the choice of bearing type- or both ? And the Numeric shifter is not cheap - certainly there is plenty of 'room' in the price for durable/appropriate bearings !
So let me get this strait, the company addressed your concern and expedited shipping to another continent with a replacement part and you are still complaining? Are you that hard to please? Sometimes components fail no matter how good the manufacturing process is.
This looks like a Numeric design failure - not 'manufacturing process'. That is why it is important for others to know about it.
The manufacturer knows about the defect but made no attempt to proactively contact customers. A simple message on Rennlist would have been a good start to issuing a TSB for the shifter.
BTW this is a $700 part not some cheapo Fleabay item. And it comes with a Lifetime Warrenty

^^^ this is the first I've heard of any failures with this shifter. Has anyone ever heard of this happening before as there have been many installs to date. I've owned this shifter for 16 months now and a dozen track events with no issues. With a lifetime warranty I'm sure Numeric will take care of the bearing IF it ever fails. Numeric posts often so it will be interesting if they address this as precautionary replacement or simply wait until a unit fails and replace it under warranty.
