Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My 996.1 engine went out. Took it to a local shop and they said something is broken inside. they need to drop the engine and take it apart to see the damage. I towed it back home. 😔 need to start looking for an engine
sounded like an exhaust leak at first with a rattle noise. Then loss of power and louder rattle
more details . Was driving normal in town, pull into a store and it sounded like an exhaust leak and i thought a heat shield came lose. Sounded almost normal when just idling. But give it gas and loud rattles. Tried to limp home, but car would die. It would start but didn't idle
Oh Really ????? .. How interesting !!!! ... Yes I would still pull the oil filter and look for lots of metal debris first......( and the new IMSB also raises concerns )
Secondly, I would drop the oil pan...quick and easy and will tell a LOT .... It is a look in the Soul of the M96 ...
Sorry, but I have to ask. As part of the LN Engineering IMS Bearing installation instructions, you or them have to send back the old bearing, because if there is anything wrong with the old bearing, they won't warranty it. Did you get a look at the bearing they took out to see what condition it was in?
I didn't want to give a 'thumbs-up' to your post due to the possibilty of misinterpretation. Rather...Thank You for sharing your experience, painful as it must be. I bought my 996 with no IMS history of any kind, but I have verified bore-scoring. So I'm doing 2000 mile oil changes and avoiding short trips among other measures to make my engine (i hope) last longer. Posts like yours give us another data point as to how to respond when funny noises crop up and what to look for as we motor along.
I wish you the best in your next chapter of Porsche ownership. If I were in your shoes, I might be looking longingly at a Audi 2,7 or (apostasy alert) LS swap.
