Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I run 245's on 7.5x18 wheels without any issue for my autocross setup.
Leading evidence: 'Run 245's' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run 225's' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Lots of Miata autoX guys are running 225/45 on 7" wide wheels, but I don't know how that translates into every day/spirited driving in our cars.

Subaru guys also run 225/45 tires on 7" wide wheels, but again, AWD/Front engine may be very different than our RWD/Rear engine cars.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looking at buying new tires for my OEM 17s, and I'm wondering if anyone can explain why I shouldn't/couldn't bump my tires up in size?
OEM tires on my car:
205-50-17
VS
225 45 17
Height difference is minimal, but it's quite a bit wider than the OEM tires. Is it too wide? I'm also looking to buy some small (5-8mm) spacers for the front/rear to improve stability/grip.
This is the site I use for the calculator:
http://www.wallaceracing.com/tire-aspect-calc.php
I believe the OEM 17's are either 7" or 7.5", which is why I'm not sure if the 225s would be too wide and cause a lot of flexing mid turn.
A larger tire normally requires a larger wheel. On the stock tire the wider tire will have less side wall rigidity, that will make handling worse not better. The spacers will shift the center of balance on the wheel bearings. Overall you are playing with the factory design in a way that could create wheel bearing issues depending on their age, and will make overall handling less precise. Is this the effect are you looking for?
Obviously that's a silly question, not many people wish to decrease their car's ability to perform (disregarding the stance/swag/hellaflush idiots).
It's also silly to imagine that what Porsche created in 2000 to be a daily driver for the masses cannot be improved upon with aftermarket options.
Increasing the contact patch and widening the track within reason are very common methods of increasing grip. Without the additional weight up above the front wheels, perhaps the flex isn't as bad? Lots of variables here, which is why I'm asking the guys here that have owned these cars for a while and may have learned a thing or two during that time.
Nice, didn't know Tire Rack had that on their site!
Would be nice to hear from someone that has run the wider tires, I understand that just because it can fit doesn't mean it's "better" per say.
Can you explain why you didn't like the larger tires?
The only car I went with larger tires on was an e30. I went from the stock 15x6 wheels to a square set of 17x8 wheels and loved it.
I run 245's on 7.5x18 wheels without any issue for my autocross setup.
225's on your 7x17's should be just fine. If you have 7.5x17, you are more than fine and
should
probably be running 225's.
The width of the wheel is stamped on the back. Pop a wheel off and take a look.
You will get many conflicting views on spacers.
Some will view them as strictly a cosmetic upgrade.
Some will view them as a performance upgrade.
