The linkage seems to be fine, so I just removed the broken bit off the end of the linkage and installed the hew part and then reconnected the linkage.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2003 C2 While snooping around around the engine looking for coolant leaks today I saw this part on the driver's side of the engine bay. It looks like some type of actuator rod that is disconnected on one end (looks like a tab is broken off of it) and just hanging there. I scrolled through every picture in the parts list a little while ago and didn't see anything that looks like it. Any insight would be appreciated. Also it appears that there is not a similar part on the passenger side. Let me know if you need better pictures, I was having trouble getting a good angle for a picture. I had to put my finger there to make sure I was actually getting a picture of it...

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Actually, it might be this part #20 It looks like it's still attached to #21, but not part #18 Part 21 is a "sensor" 996 631 121 00 Part 18 is a "support" 996 341 371 03

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ah ha! it's for the headlight sensor level. That makes sense because I was kind of thing it was there to sense the travel of the suspension.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Now I just have to figure out if part 18 is still there and then I wonder if the sensor still works...

POST 5Original post

I had a bad sensor on the Cayenne and it caused the headlights to constantly 'hunt' up and down. On the cayenne, there are front and rear sensors both on the left side.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeah, that's kind of what it looks like except the rods are metal on the 996. I've never noticed my headlights doing anything weird--probably because the weight of the rods are keeping it pulled all the way down. With the lighter weight plastic of yours, I could see that it might bounce around more.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 16577694

The levers just move with the suspension. The motors in the headlights were causing the bounce because they weren't getting the correct signal from the level sensor(s). Plastic vs metal wouldn't have made any difference. I have no idea if it works on the same principal in the 996 though.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The point I was making was that because mine is metal and fairly heavy, it is hanging straight down and not likely to bounce up and down much.

POST 9Original post

Very common for these to fail. The ball / socket seizes up and the plastic part (18) then breaks. The plastic part that attaches to the coffin arm is cheap but the metal link rod is expensive. You might get lucky and be able to free up the seized ball / socket by mounting the rod in a vice and very gently moving the ball end around.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I replaced this part today. The linkage seems to be fine, so I just removed the broken bit off the end of the linkage and installed the hew part and then reconnected the linkage. To give you an idea of what was left, the picture shows the new part on top and what's left of the old part on bottom.
