I will be bringing my laptop and durametric to the test drive to look for stored codes.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

On Monday Im doing a Chicago friend a favor and checking out/test driving a local 02 C2 cab thats for sale here in NJ. I own a 03 4s coupe and have never driven a rwd carrera nor ever dealt with a cabriolet. Looking for advice on things to be on the lookout for concerning the roof mechanism and or anything unique to cabs. I will be bringing my laptop and durametric to the test drive to look for stored codes. Thanks

POST 2Original post

Roll each of the rear windows up and down separately with the engine off, and listen carefully to the regulator mechanisms. I have a bad one now on my 99' cab that started to get noisier than normal before it gave up the ghost. So if one of them is on its way out, it may behave and sound different (slightly louder and slower in my case) than the other one. Ask the owner if he's ever dealt with hydraulic leaks or any other soft top issues. Then cycle the top completely down and back up, and then repeat again. These cars are pushing 20 years old now, and the seals in one or both of the hydraulic cylinders can start to leak. Also another issue I need to contend with soon.

POST 3Original post

Make sure that when cycling the top up and down that the top's side edges, just above where the front and rear side windows meet, remains inside its channel and not over it. If the top's side edges are over the channel, then the side tension cables need attention. Not saying this is a deal breaker, just a point for price negotiation. Also, check to see that the clamshell's support arms are intact on both sides: when I bought my Cab, I neglected to check that until I found a broken arm half in one of the door compartments. Went to look, sure enough, the other half of the broken arm was still in place. Fortunately, there are two arms on each side and I haven't had any trouble with the clamshell YET!

POST 4Original post

I'd also verify the wind deflector is present (stored in the frunk) and isn't broken or damaged. Certainly not a deal breaker but if it's broken or missing it's a bit pricey to replace.

POST 5Original post

Listen for cracking or snapping sounds when roof is raising and lowering. If the owner will allow you, put the roof into service position (halfway between fully up and down). You will see two little cables with ball ends connecting the rear frame (below window) to the chassis. With a little twist, these pop off and you can fold the glass forward. You will now see a tray, with 4 plastic body pins at the forward part (where the automatic roll bar is hidden). These pull straight out and you can remove the tray, with a little pulling. This gives you full view of the mechanism, including the hydraulic unit, to look for leaks and broken bits. I’m pretty sure there is a procedure on Pelican or somewhere. Takes 5 mins.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for all the prompt responses. I will give it a thorough look. Car is actual for sale at a local VW dealership. No idea yet what service records they have available or how they acquired it. My indy is only 5 miles from dealership so if the car passes my initial inspection, and my friend wants to proceed, i will move on to a more comprehensive PPI, if permitted.
