I used a tight space screwdriver that is basically a clamp for a bit attached to a handle and is very low profile.

I used Blue Magic QuikSteel epoxy putty because it was easy, but you could mix epoxy and thickener if you are so inclined.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2002 C4 Cabriolet I have speakers in the doors. And my window sticker says hi-fi sound option But it isn't Bose??? Was there 3 options? standard, hi fi, then bose??? Also I can't seem to find the factory subwoofer....it should be in the passenger foot well right? So I guess the hi-fi sound doesn't have the subwoofer but has the door speakers and the bose does?? Final question...since my system is not Bose...is it still driven by a outboard amp with a funky DSP in it or the head unit? Thanks for the help, this will guide me on how I upgrade it.

POST 2Original post

mine's a hi-fi as well, it had the MOST system in it..which was a PIA to get rid of...the dealer ended up ripping that out and putting another amp and a sony head...I left the speakers alone...one note on the speakers...they are REALLY good for 10yr old speakers...whether it's the head unit or amp or both, I don't know, but they are impressive (for what they are)....that being said, I am currently looking for some speakers to replace the ones in the back...I don't know what size they are...I think 5 1/4...I believe the subs are in the door...could be completely wrong though

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11616531

the door is 5" The dash are 4" and so are the rear speakers by the seats I don't have MOST since I am a 2002. MOST was 2003+ The door speakers are dedicated woofers but not subs. Porsche put sub boxes' in the rear of hardtops and on the side of the console in the front on Cabrios....the speakers in this "sub box" are 5 1/4 drivers..... What I didn't realize is you can have hi-fi without this 5 1/4 sub box....mine is a cabrio so I would see the sub module in the passenger footwell rather easily...

POST 4Original post

THX!! been looking for the measurements! obviously i'm not a stereo guy.....I don't have a sub...I don't think...and mine is a hifi....hell, tell me where to look and i'll see if there's a relief for the sub....I think it's behind the passenger side rear seat in a coupe, right?

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 11616562

The sub is behind both rear seats in a coupe. You would see air ports with Bose written under them when you drop the seats. I believe you can have hi-fi sound without the Bose package which seems to remove the subs. I assume the speakers are different too but not sure.

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 11616510

Yes, I have the M490 option which doesn't have the subwoofer. There was also the M680 option which did, I presume that's the Bose one.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

FYI, I just pulled my dash speakers to look at em...they are all 4 ohm everyone keeps talking about 2 ohm, but all my speakers are 4 ohm. I guess this is nice for amp compatibility if I don't replace that amp.

POST 9Original post

the door speakers ARE the subs in non Bose systems. Dash and rear speakers are identical 2 part units with separate tweeters and mids. I replaced all the speakers in mine a few years ago. Heres a link to the subs. Last post is mine. http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...er-find-2.html

POST 11Original post

Me too...I don't think there is a direct replacement for the factory speakers...odd egg shape

POST 12Original post

You remove the individual speakers from the 4x6 plates and epoxy them into the speaker adapters under the grilles. Worked well for me.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 11621851

Remove as in dremel the metal around em? What epoxy did u use?

POST 14Original post

Yes - a dremel. I used Blue Magic QuikSteel epoxy putty because it was easy, but you could mix epoxy and thickener if you are so inclined. I used Polk speakers. The tweeters fit very well in the original tweeters space. The first one took a bit over an hour to convert, the others about 20 minutes. There is some soldering involved too. I retained the factory connectors which had to be epoxied on. Removing the rear seat grilles is easy. The dash grille challenge is unscrewing the forward screw. The windshield is very close to the grille and a normal screwdriver, even a short one, won't fit well. I used a tight space screwdriver that is basically a clamp for a bit attached to a handle and is very low profile. Then I realized that I had a flexible drive that would work too.
