Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So new to me 996 22000 miles. 04. Took it out today and drove it pretty good. Noticing out of first gear..taking rpms up a bit, when depressing the clutch it made a clunk noise. Scared me...almost as if I pressed clutch and pull gear shift at same time almost popping out of gear but it wasn't.
Clear as mud?
Is this because of gearing? I have never owned a 6 speed before.
I had a similar thing with my 02. I swapped out my motor mounts and haven't experienced it since. Here's my thread:

Have you much time in a manual transmission equipped car?
Maybe you like to rest/leave your hand on the shifter and moved it a tad sooner than you should? IOWs, maybe it did pop out of gear a bit, with your help.
Take the car to an empty parking lot. With the engine warmed up shift into 1st gear and very smoothly let the clutch out. Let it out slow enough the car moves forward with no extra gas pedal application. Stop the car and put the transmission in reverse and repeat. Bear in mind the gearing is a bit different and you may have to give the engine some small amount of throttle.
If as you are letting out the clutch if you hear a clunk that could be a sign the dual mass flywheel has a problem.
While I've had a bad motor mount in my Boxster there was never any clunk but DTMiller's advice regarding motor mounts is sound. Have the mounts checked for any signs of problems -- the rubber in front one in my Boxster was cracked/split -- and have any bad ones replaced.
I have owned 7 Pcars...all manual and learned to drive on manual. My gut is telling me that I had it revved up pretty good and probably did help it pop out of gear, but I will do some additional digging on it?
Just drive the car paying particular attention to the clutch being sure to let out slowly and smoothly. If the DMF is bad there'll be clunks aplenty.
Have you had the brake/clutch fluid flushed bled recently? Say in the last 2 years? If not you might consider having this done. The clutch action of my Boxster improved quite a bit after having this done. I let it go nearly 2.5 years. Based on my experience it makes a difference.
I just replaced the engine mounts in my 2000 996 with 58K miles on the odometer. What a world of difference in both shifting and in getting rid of that awful clunk coming out of the rear when driving over potholes or man hole covers. Should have done this earlier; such a cheap and easy job to do yourself and the benefit is worth it! Don't hesitate. Just buy the OEMs and replace the originals.
