It ran perfectly, had a serious OCD PPI done on it which found low rear brake pads and a cracked fan belt and that's about it (of any consequence).

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

EDIT: see my post #29 for clarification. Seems like some 996 owners are insecure in what they have and always need to "enhance" something like 991 this, 997 style that, widest tire this, etc. Also seems like 996 owners are always worrying about something, even if it doesn't break and even though there have been tons of posts on the subject. Then you have the traditional OCD Analysis Paralysis that often goes on around here too. Lastly, you have owners that try to cheap it out on some parts. This is a Porsche and yes some stuff is overpriced but it also deserves some level of quality within reason. Just a rant, observation, opinion. Despite these things, it still keeps things interesting and lively around here and the reason why I'm still here. Discuss...

POST 2Original post

Not I...said the fly I did not settle or compromise. Car I bought has everything I wanted (and more)...which is why I bought it Except for the quad exhaust tips (got them for looks), I have NOT done any mods to my car...NADA...ZILCH....ZERO. Thus far (knock on wood), only had to fix a leaking coolant tank but opted to replace the WP/serp belt, lines/hoses and t-stat at the same time. Someday when symptoms of a bad RMS/AOS show up, will have those done along with an IMSB upgrade.

POST 3Original post

no remorse at all, I'd have been pissed if I had not pulled the trigger IMS (sorry) within a month of purchase, no questions there taking delivery of a GT3 shifter as I think it will enhance the driving experience looking forward to over maintaining and learning more about my 996 scored the service manual from another RL'r and get to buy some cool tools exactly what kromdom said

POST 4Original post

Not everyone who makes changes to their car is doing it out of insecurity. Some of us just enjoy tinkering, regardless of the make of the car. Some people fall into the "Porsche made it, and thus it is sacrosanct" camp - like Hurdi often is. I suppose maybe if someone had an arctic silver 996 (the most common color), they might be even more inclined to add some personal touch, but I still don't think this is due to insecurity. The insecure folks are the ones who buy a Porsche because they want to be seen driving a Porsche. They're the ones who vinyl out parts of the headlight so it won't LOOK like a 996. Everyone freaks out from time to time, regardless of the make/model, and the knee-jerk reaction is to post a panic post about it rather than taking a deep breath or two and then looking to see if it's something to care about. Often, posts from people who are already on the verge of freaking out about some symptom (Example: "puff of smoke" threads) are met with rubber-stamp "That sounds expensive, better flatbed it" responses, which ratchets the response from nervous to full-blown panic. Not sure what you mean re: the parts point. I choose parts that are correct, even if they're not precisely what Porsche would want you to do. For example, I'll buy the Bosche MAF sensor from Amazon to save 50% rather than buying it from the Porsche parts counter. I want the car to be safe, so I'm not going to have a buddy drill out some eBay rotors for me to save an extra $50 per rotor. I don't think it matters whether the car is a Porsche or a POS - if you want it to be reliable, you buy decent-quality parts. My car isn't a shrine to the almighty Porsche family, so I'm not going to willingly throw good money after bad on stuff that doesn't need to come in a Porsche box - but it's still a great car that I push fairly hard, so I want to choose items that will not cause the car - or me - to die prematurely. If you're driving a used 996 instead of a new 911, are you cheap? No, because if you were truly cheap, you'd be driving a used basic Honda or Toyota. Many of us chose the 996 because it's a great value for money. I don't see any reason why the practice of trying to get the best value for your money should be limited solely to the purchase of the car - this practice can extend to parts purchases as well.

POST 5Original post

I feel like this is at least in part directed at my decision to not spend $42 on a Porsche labeled boxed ignition switch instead of the $11 identical part from Napa. I guess that could make me cheap. I'm OK with that.

Wait, so let me get this all straight. There are owners that want to modify their cars, owners that want to maintain their cars as original, and owners that fail to maintain their cars? Someone alert the media, this is a new discovery!!!

POST 10Original post

Granted I am a new Porsche owner, but I didn't buy a 996 to upgrade it or make any changes whatsoever. My car is 14 years old now and some may call me crazy, but I am going to keep it bone stock as the factory intended. I did the same thing with my 1973 BMW 2002 and it paid off when I went to sell it and it was all original. I love the 996 styling and driving experience as is. Worrisome? Sure, I worry about all of my cars and did the LN Engineering IMSB and RMS within a few months of purchase. Insecure? Nope. Cheap? Nope, but if I can source the part from the original manufacturer and not from Porsche and install it myself or have my Porsche buddy install it, heck yeah I'll save that cash.

POST 11Original post

I remember the day I took home my 996. The 25 mile drive from the car lot to my garage was sweet bliss. Sweet, sweet innocent bliss. The innocent bliss of a newborn babe. It wasn't until I joined RennList that I discovered I had actually purchased a $30,000 time bomb.

POST 12Original post

POST 13Original post

I don't think there is a cheaper 996 onwer on the plante than me. I install parts that others remove from their cars.

POST 15Original post

First, the 911 is one of the most altered and hot rodded cars ever made. If altering their cars makes 996 owners insecure, then so are the owners of every 911 generation. Second, I find Porsche owners as a group to be generally a lot more neurotic than other sports car owners. Ferrari owners are generally people who love looks and image over all else. Corvette owners are generally working class guys made good. Datsun GTR owners are former racer boys who made it big and traded in the trashed Impreza for the GTR. Porsche owners are, well nerds. They tend to be doctors and engineers and very smart but detail obsessed and more than a bit neurotic. So the constant worrying you notice I find at least to be true of all Porsche owners. It comes with the breed i think.

POST 16Original post

Soooo.. Let me make sure I understand. People that modify their Porsches are insecure ? Are you guys adults ? You have never had a pair of custom fitted leather shoes ? A bespoke suit ? Had you wife's jewelry custom made. Engraving on your watch ? Added a deck to your pool ? Customized your motorcycle or custom built a motorcycle. Seem to me the judgmental types making fun of others are doing so from their own place of fear. Resume your uninspired custom less lives in your off the rack polyester clothes. Nice one juveniles.

POST 21Original post

I looked for a near bone-stock 996 V2 for mine. I want to drive it, every day, everywhere I go, and have the (very) occasional track day as an intermediate DE student. For me the base model is plenty. I would consider upgrades only for substantial reliability improvements and for any stunning performance improvements at reasonable cost, low complexity, and are reversible. You can see mine has an x74 suspension which fits those requirements beyond all expectations, and which I got from the PO for an excellent price. Except for race-oriented brake pads, nothing else has been done on the performance side. Reliability is another story. The 996 engine has some severe weak points and I hope the worst ones have now been addressed by Flat6's work. Another thing I'm just now finding out is that some connectors have corroded; extent is unknown. That issue will need to be dealt with. There are apparently a few other modifications that may fit these criteria such as Fabspeed exhaust if/when the stock one fails, or Gert's performance cats if/when the originals fail. Haven't looked at these. My wife's 987 came with a short shift kit installed and the original 987 shifter in a box; I may install that in my 996. It's sitting in the garage... why not. Far more important to me is to drive the car. Drive it, as spirited as possible every day, to directly experience the reasons for buying it in the first place. I hope to see 150k miles or 200k if possible, and as few as possible in a straight line. The 996 is a fantastic value in that regard and I'd encourage anybody I know to consider it that way. But that value deteriorates very quickly once thousands and thousands, or tens of thousands, of "stuff" is added on. I had an '87 Carrera for 16 years which I drove every day with the same very occasional track days. I left it bone stock except for shock/strut upgrades to Bilstein HD. Once the '87's value became dominated by "classic" status and details of appearance mattered more than pure driving pleasure, I sold it. Loved the car, but the 996 is leaps and bounds better in all respects. After driving the "new" 996 for a week, the Carrera felt like an underpowered VW bug (of which I've owned a close relative for many years). No second thoughts. I drove and treated the '87 the way I described above, and in the link below you can see high quality photos of it when I sold it. It ran perfectly, had a serious OCD PPI done on it which found low rear brake pads and a cracked fan belt and that's about it (of any consequence). I would have gotten in the car any day and driven it across the country. Now somebody else can worry about whether a new ding took $X,XXX off the market value. Still, when you're in the middle of an "issue" like metal in the oil filter, or phantom fault codes, misfires, etc., it can be difficult to maintain the faith. But, we will get through these issues. A lot of what I like to read about here is hints and help on diagnosis and repair, and I hope to pay this forward myself as I run into and solve issues with my car. Worry/insecurity... it seems like about 80-90% of 996 owners never have reason to think anything other than positive thoughts about their cars. But there is no question that the engine's weaknesses are severe and very expensive to deal with. Everything else about the car is superb: handling is just fabulous, feedback is outstanding (to an '87 driver even), comfort is outstanding, AC works, it looks great. Take care of the engine issues and this is a great car all around.

POST 25Original post

I don't worry about the imsb and only became aware if the "so call problem" when I joined this board. I got the idea of one or two small mods from this board. metal pedals, 911 letters on rear, and that's it. Of course I will go for OEM parts as against Porsche to save cash in my DIY jobs. The latest from Pelican parts was an OEM coolant pump advertised at $150 less than the Porsche one. And wouldn't you know it, they didn't have the OEM in stock anywhere so I went for the Porsche one anyway. Also went for the 160F thermostat and took out the 183F original. Total cost with gaskets and free shipping was $460. Did it myself and probably saved around $500. I love being able to DIY my car and get to admire and love it more the more I find out how it ticks. Of course I am very proud to be seen driving a gorgeous 996 Porsche. Who wouldn't be. That is not the real reason why I got the car. It's because the 996 was within my buying budget and wow did I get a gem. I am a fanatical 911 Porsche lover and have been since I was 22years of age when they first came out. My screen saver alone has 2051 photos and all 911. Many are owned by posters to this board. I am obsessed with Porsche BECAUSE "there is NO substitute" lol...

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I think I need to clarify the modification part. What I was referring to was trying hard to make your car something it's not. For example people trying to make their cars look like a 991 or 997, etc. Heck it's sort of hard not to modify or be an enthusiast and not have a modification, especially if you are on these forums. I'm a prime example. Hope that clears things up for some of these people huffin and puffin... lol As for parts, I don't want to make it sound like you have to buy OEM and such or that I'm a snob in any way. I'm talking about Home Depot $hit and such...on a Porsche...Ninja Please.... There. I ruffled some feathers. I feel better now.

If you ask a proctologist, I bet everyone has hemorrhoids, too. People don't come to car forums when everything's working perfectly with nothing to worry about...they go online when something ain't right. Expecting to hear "all's good, no worries" on a car form is about as realistic as expecting to find the next Maya Angelou at a Ke$ha concert.

I will buy an OEM part of known quality, like a Bosch MAF, but I don't think of that as cheaping out. I definitely worry about stuff that I don't need to worry about. Intellectually, I understand that I have a pretty well sorted, reliable car. But I still worry about stupid crap, although I think I'm worrying a little less with every trouble-free mile. Honestly, the car just runs. As for "enhancements," I guess I've made a couple that are strictly cosmetic, like bumperettes painted in body color. For the most part, though, I think mine are intended to improve performance/driving experience (Numeric Racing shifter, 18" wheels) or to add technology that either wasn't available when my car was built (Bluetooth/Internet radio) or my car didn't have when it left the factory (xenon headlights). To me, this makes sense for a 15-year-old sports car that will never be a collector vehicle ... IMO, most of these mods have provided pretty good return on relatively minimal investment. In particular, the Numeric shifter and the nine8six/particlewave xenon headlight conversion are both huge bang for the buck. So I don't know where, exactly, that puts me on any continuum of 996 owners. But I think it reflects my core belief that while the 996 is a great sports car value, there are some areas where relatively low cost improvement is possible. I don't think it's insecurity about what I have, just a belief that the state of the art has advanced since 2000, and there are ways to make my very good car even better.

Such thread. Let me add some more "meaningful" content to this lively discussion. I also heard that Porsche owners have tiny *****??? Statistic shows that those with most expensive and most hardcore Porsches are the least endowed; IE GT3, GT2, Turbo owners (extreme overcompensation, social value and sense of endowment is derived entirely from the car's pedigree). That group is closely followed by the OCD/worrier type owners; IE must have flawless car, only OEM parts, DT40 oil users (very high overcompensation, such owners often treat their vehicle as a female companion and derive high degree of their self worth from the car they drive) . Please discuss.
