I used the Alpine SPS-410's also for dash and rear speakers.

My 2000 C2 came with the CDR-220, which I like the looks of a lot, and it better matches the LED (orange on black) used everywhere else in the interior.

Old Marantz/RCA/Carver/NAD amps drove them well only ones I've used on Bose home speakers..

Suggestion
The 996 has orange LED display (orange letters/numbers on black background), rather than backlit, and there are radios that allow changing the LED display color to match the orange 996 display.

Suggestion
I probably should have used "black on orange (LCD)" for the Continental and "Orange on Black (LED)" for the 996 dash displays, CR-210 radios, Blaupunkt Berman, etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Im thinking about hauling my stock stereo and doing a single din radio. BT Zane all that jazz. Didnt want to do a double din because personal preference and looking more stock. Looking at blaupunkt radios cause are German and thought look cool. I dont want a complicated radio and nine sun categories to adjust settings. Almost want a analog EG in lower tray. I know alpine Kenwood and pioneer be best bet. Or do I just leave alone. Ive used search engine. No need to flame lol
Dont know anything aboit the bp radio but also check out Continental radios. They have a classic look too. I got mine from Bergvill FX. They have little stickers too that cover the continental logo with a porsche logo.
Its all on their site. They have a simple harness available.
I think they r netherlands but they ship dhl quickly. They support the porsche community so i bought from them direct.
Last question, I get the removal keys, but proper harnesssomething I can do or just have stereo place install? Plug and play? Novice question i know. Havent installed a stereo in a while and do not want to hack it up
Aesthetically, I feel like the Continental with the orange backlit LCD, is a better match for models older than than the 996. The 996 has orange LED display (orange letters/numbers on black background), rather than backlit, and there are radios that allow changing the LED display color to match the orange 996 display.
I think Blaupunkt has always made some of the best looking radios, but I've been disappointed with the sound quality of them. I put a great-looking Blaupunkt in my old 1987 3.2 Carrera and it looked great, but didn't sound that great. I've never done an "apples & apples" of Blaupunkt with another head unit (changing nothing else) -- which would be a much better test, so don't take my word as gospel, but that's been my experience.
I put a Nakamichi in my 996 that looks great (color match orange LED), sounds pretty good, has Bluetooth built-in, but the mic isn't very good for voice calling -- I don't like it enough that I would recommend it.
I think it's possible to add Bluetooth to the stock Becker radio -- at least for music playback, not sure about voice calls. I probably would add Bluetooth to the Becker if I was going to do it again.
Mine is pretty good but it depends on what u do with the rest if the system. I feel all of the porsche stuff is garbage so i put all new speakers in and a kenwood amp that accepts high and low inputs. I believe the continental has only high level outputs.
The bluetooth is very clean, no noise.
I guess if I could have music play back from my stock wouldnt be terrible.
Im just not cool wt car looking way it does then a ultra bright color from stereo and contrast entire center stack.
The Bremen looks pretty good (found this on the web) -- the LED display fits very well, though the overall style of the radio/controls is a bit more "retro" than the 996 time period:
This is the Continental (good looking radio, overall styling is maybe closer to the period of the 996 than the Bermen, but the orange backlit LCD display looks out of place compared to all of the other "orange LED on black" displays in the 996).
I agree. Conti doesnt look bad but blaupunkt looks better slightly with back lit orange. This will kill me lol. Anyone got images of updated units love to see them.
I think RLers fall into 2 camps -- a single DIN radio that looks "age appropriate" -- or double din modern. For the single DIN age-appropriate crowd, It might be a good idea to create a "Post your single DIN 996 radio replacement solution" thread. Then when everybody has posted, create another thread with a poll on all the radio options mentioned (with photo examples from the prior thread) to vote on the best single-DIN radio replacement. These radio replacement discussions pop up often and don't usually have that much discussion, so that might be a way to have a more focused discussion on the topic.
Yeah, I think my terminology was confusing. I probably should have used "black on orange (LCD)" for the Continental and "Orange on Black (LED)" for the 996 dash displays, CR-210 radios, Blaupunkt Berman, etc.
The "Orange on Black (LED)" displays are a better match for everything in the 996 and the 1998-2005 time period, but I guess "Black on Orange (LCD)" could be a preference if somebody intentionally wants to go even more retro. What looks best is definitely a very individualized preference.
Wow, I forgot that that the CDR-210 radios were actually LCD, like the Continental. My 2000 C2 came with the CDR-220, which I like the looks of a lot, and it better matches the LED (orange on black) used everywhere else in the interior. I'd probably swap out the CDR-210 on looks alone. For the CDR-220, I'd probably just add Bluetooth to it if I were to do it again.
My Nakamichi replacement radio is below. I think it fits the 996, looks-wise, extremely well, it sounds good (not amazing) also, but the user interface is a little clunky and the built-in mic for Bluetooth calls isn't great (would be better if it had an external mic input).
The prior CR-220:
I do love the CDR-220 looks (plus they came in Ferraris at the time as well) but they can be costly used, and even with Bluetooth integration functionality lags behind a modern unit. For example I press the volume button on mine to answer the phone, and pressing and holding on the volume button gives me Siri voice commands. My Sony also has a 4x50W amp (my car came with the base system without an amp or door speakers).
Very cool and good to know. Is it designed to be easy to flip to give you a choice, or do you have to do some hacking? I'd love to see a picture of it reversed.
Ive got stock Becker wt CD. Has speakers doors (I cant believe they had some with out?)
can someone send me in direction to obtain harness to just have Bluetooth for music. I see ones that attach to CD changer aux port. I have no idea if my stereo has CD changer capability or did they all and the CD changer was the option?
just dont want to buy wrong part.
might still just grab Conti and say all good. Not enough to worry about i guess.
Pulled the trigger on the two **** conti wt CD. Figure for money was decent bet. See how sounds if need Ill do some imaging speakers on dash, mid in doors and cross overs or something. Thanks for advice and input folks.
You need to:
1. dismantle radio
2. remove LCD screen holder, which is usually a thin metal bracket. this clamps the LCD and the polarizer to the circuit board. It may be soldered to the circuit board.
3. flip the polarizer over
4. reinstall the LCD screen holder
5. reassemble the radio
Google up "LCD polarizer flip" for some videos, not of this radio.
Old Blaupunkts were easy to operate and to my eyes look way better than modern radios.
An old model Blaupunkt had a Dolby switch that would make FM sound really sweet. Some FM stations had Dolby equipment in their broadcast system which are surely no longer active, so don't know if the Dolby button would improve the sound like it used to.
For those who have a CDR-23 and want the Bremen. I sent an inquiry to Crutchfield regarding what was needed, they said this harness is required:
https://www.crutchfield.com/p_142LPP...Interface.html
The rep also said wed need a specific mount to slide the radio in place. One nugget of advice I was given was wed need to adjust the fade to the desired setting before pulling the CDR-23.
Just got my Conti and harness from Bergvil. Bough wrong harness because was unaware i have m490 option. My fault. Kinda sucks cause base harness is 18$ and 22$ shipping, the m490 is 88$ lol. Damn it
Nice work. That's a different model Continental than was posted earlier -- this one looks really great and very at home in the 996 -- will be even better if you can do the polarity switch.
Regarding sound quality -- definitely replace the dash and rear speakers first -- the originals are low quality and not very robust -- chances are they will have some structural damage from dried out paper cones when you take them out. The original door woofers are actually very well made, so they are likely still in perfect shape and aren't that easy to improve on, so I think you are better off leaving them in there.
I didn't hear a huge difference with the head unit either. Dash/rear speakers will help and are an easy next step.
That's the model I went with. Even though I have yet to play a single CD, I wanted the option to be able to.
I agree that replacing the speakers will make the biggest difference. For speakers I went with Focal that were almost $800.00 in 2018. If I had to do it over, I would go with something cheaper. I also think the Becker head unit has a little better sound than the Continental.
Good to know wasnt just me. Sound seemed thin. Im betting becker had little better internals to some extent. Old stuff were built a more robust. Im my opinion
That definitely seems to be the way to go -- the CD player looks entirely appropriate for the 996-era.
I agree with this logic. I think the limits in aftermarket 996 speakers (using the original speaker locations) are more of a "physics issue" on driver size (for the dash & rear speakers at least) than a "quality issue". I went with Alpines, which were pretty reasonably priced. I have no doubt the Focals are better, but there's only so much the additional quality can do when sound is ultimately limited by the size of the drivers. I would have happily spent a bit more on speakers, but it was a pretty big leap in cost from everything else to the Focals, so I couldn't justify it given limits of driver size.
I did the speakers and head unit at the same time, so I really don't have a feeling about Becker versus Nakamichi. I don't know if it was better or worse, but it wasn't a big change in sound quality going from Becker to Nak.
Can i get short list on dash size speakers and rear speakers for 2000 cab? Im gonna start looking around for nice set. Dont need crazy bass just thick sound. Like marantz silver face receiver !
I tackled this job a couple of years ago (99 996 cab). Read every thread I could find on the subject. Many people mentioned using Focal speakers, but the model they mentioned wasn't available, so the person at Crutchfield suggested Focal RCX-100s so I bought them. Did not fit. Wasn't even close. Most of the other speakers on Crutchfield's site could not determine whether they would fit my car or not, so I took a chance on Alpine S-S40 x 4. Took a little modification, but worked pretty easily. All four original speakers were trashed. Foam on the woofers completely gone.
If you're doing this job, I can't recommend strongly enough to spend another $100 or so and the get 996 speaker adaptors from CAI-store.com. Saved a ton of time over trying to use the old ones. End result was the system sounds pretty good.
Hope this helps!
I used the Alpine SPS-410's also for dash and rear speakers. Post #40 in my old thread (
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...y-220-a-2.html
) has a "how to" video on installing them and also my additional notes from putting them in. Crutchfield had wired connectors to make the speakers plug and play.
FWIW,, The Bose manufactured speakers require a significantly higher current (Not voltage) level than other speakers,
They tend to use old school 2ohm speakers.. standard amps need not apply. I've found their home large speakers
require Real Transistor or Tube amps not dsp amps to make them work.
Old Marantz/RCA/Carver/NAD amps drove them well only ones I've used on Bose home speakers..
Probably the reason the Porsche factory "most" amp seems to have a rep for dying I suspect
the trunk does not ventilate well enough to keep them cool.
