Of course you'll want the battery disconnected before you remove the module.

I started looking here for answers and decided it was either a bad connection somewhere or most likely a shot module.

fault code for "ignition circuit side airbag." Then I brought it to the Porsche dealer and they quoted $2,350 to "gain access, remove passenger front door panel and replace side airbag."

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I tried the same part number from a different year Boxster and it didn't work.
I got the dreaded passenger airbag light about a year ago now on my 996.2. Not sure if it's coincidence that it came on after my battery had died. In any event, it's been a saga that I can't seem to wrap my head around. My indie mechanic couldn't clear
fault code for "ignition circuit side airbag." Then I brought it to the Porsche dealer and they quoted $2,350 to "gain access, remove passenger front door panel and replace side airbag."
I thought that was insane because none of the airbag system had deployed. So I ate the $300 diagnostic fee and took the car back. I started looking here for answers and decided it was either a bad connection somewhere or most likely a shot module. So I brought it to a second indie in hopes that they could confirm. They said there were no electrical connection issues and the airbag itself was sound. But yep, they want $2900 to replace the module. $1600 is for a new module from Porsche plus labor. $600 rolled over from their diagnostic charge to determine it's the module. I then asked if I can provide a working used module, would they do the work. They said they would. My concern now is if I buy one of these "used but good" modules is it possible they can't "Unlock" or programming it to work in my car? I get the sense they've never tried a used one before. I'd really like to save $1500 bucks on a module at this point, but I certainly don't want to pay for the labor and realize I'm back to square one.

I have loved this car for the last 6 years of ownership, but crazy costs like this make the idea of selling it creep into the back of my mind. Any insight from the community is greatly appreciated.
I just went through this. Buy a used control module and install it yourself. It's easy. Try to get one from the same model year as your car. There is a little bit of programming that the dealer has to do to unlock a brand new module. I tried the same part number from a different year Boxster and it didn't work. I don't know if it was because it was a different year or because it was from a Boxster, or both. In any case, getting one from the same year 996 is recommended. Used modules are pretty cheap compared to the thousands of dollars for a new one. You'll need a Durametric to clear the airbag code/light afterwards.
Thanks Bill. I did see some of your back and forth with the same issue. Do you mind elaborating on what you mean by "a little bit of programming the dealer has to do?" That's one of the main parts I'm initially stuck on. Is that if the module is new vs. used? I'm under the impression LA Dismantler by me just pulls the console and sells it "as is." I'll call them tomorrow again to ask again but they didn't know much about it the first time I called. Can anyone confirm that this should be correct correct part number for a 996.2?
The part number for my year 2000 C2 is different - 219 instead of 217. I got my part number from the Durametric when I read the code. As far as programming, I read somewhere that if you bought a brand new model it wouldn't work out of the box because a dealer would have to unlock it. If you get a used one that shouldn't be an issue. Did the indy's diagnosis provide the part number? The part in your photo is the main airbag control module and is located under the center console. If that is the proper part, installation is very easy. I'm an old fat guy and I could remove and replace it in 5 minutes. All you need is a small needle nose Vise Grip to remote the weird nuts they used. Replace them with regular nuts. Of course you'll want the battery disconnected before you remove the module.
You may want to pick up a Foxwell NT 510 or 530 and reset it yourself to see if it comes back on. NT510s are readily available for $150 all over eBay. Be sure to order it preloaded with Porsche software.
Here's a video on how to clear it. The video is with the NT520 which has been superseded by the 530, but the 510 and 530 all use the same interface and have the same capabilities. The 530 has more robust buttons and casing for shop use - but they are essentially the same tool. I've had my airbag light come on a couple times over the years but it was the more common seatbelt receptacle issue. I've had the 996 for about 7 years. After clearing it each time, the light stayed off for several years after.

Clearing the code isn't going to help him. He has a bad controller. Does the Foxwell provide detailed Porsche-specific information like the Durametric does? If not, I would spring for the extra hundred bucks and get the real deal Durametric.
I had the same issue with the air bag light on. My indie told me to check the clock spring. He said that's usually the culprit.
I bought a new clock spring online and changed it out myself. The new clock spring fixed my ABS problem.

Of course you need a laptop running windows to run the software..
