Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I ended up using 2 different sized OD grommets to work for sizes.
Leading evidence: 'Use 2 different sized od grommets' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace entire abs harness' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I searched around looking for a replacement, and found a couple references to people replacing the entire ABS harness.

My ABS harnesses are in good shape other than the grommets, so I would rather find a solution to just replace those.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was inspecting the brake system of my '99 yesterday and noticed one of the grommets holding the ABS sensor wiring harness had disintegrated. These retain the wire in a sheet metal bracket attached to the inner wheel well.
broken grommet on the left,
intact grommet on the right
The ABS wire OD is approx 7mm and the bracket ID is approx 14mm with a thickess around 1.6-1.75mm
I searched around looking for a replacement, and found a couple references to people replacing the entire ABS harness. I could not find a part number for the grommet only. My ABS harnesses are in good shape other than the grommets, so I would rather find a solution to just replace those. There are 6 total on the car, one on each front corner and two on each rear corner. I found these possibilities:
Kroon KRO28
These are listed for 964 or 993, but look visually similar. However there are no dimensions provided, so I'm not sure whether they would fit. At 11 euros each, I would like to know for sure whether they would work. I may just send an email to Kroon asking if no one here has used them on a 996.
McMaster-Carr 1061T15
Dimensional-wise these seem like they would work. They are high temperature rated silicone rubber. However, they are red (which doesn't bother me, but may bother you) and they are overall shorter (8mm) than the factory grommet (28mm). This means they will likely provide less strain relief, but I think retention and preventing chafing against the bracket is more important than strain relief here, so IMO not a big problem as long as they stay securely in the bracket. They are also cheap, at $11.94 + shipping for a pack of 10.
Has anyone else found a solution for this? I will probably try the silicone grommets from McMaster first, as I can get them quickly and cheaply. But not opposed to replacing with the Kroon bits if they are actually an equivalent to the factory grommet.
If you find them, how are you going to replace it? I don't know if it will stay if you slice it? I likely have a few old harness pigtails that may have the grommet.
Slice the grommet, slip it over the wire, then bond at the slice (just a little bit to avoid getting any on the wire) with an adhesive appropriate for the material. Clamp it lightly with a ziptie until the adhesive cures. With the grommet captured in the bracket, I think that would hold.
Looks good, how has the material held up since then? My only concern would be that plain old rubber may not last very long in that location.
I received the silicone rubber grommets from McMaster-Carr this morning, they fit well.
No issues since I installed them in 2021, but I don't drive my car year round so not a lot of mileage added yet. Even if I only get 4-5 years that would exceed my expectations for the pennies they cost. Replacing them again would be a cinch.
I found the brackets were 2 different sizes on my early 996, did you encounter this as well? I ended up using 2 different sized OD grommets to work for sizes.
Following up on this- the same size grommet worked for all 8 brackets on my car. I wrote there were 6 total in the original post, but 8 is the correct number and I can't edit it now.
