Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Run away' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run away' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thefts can happen in under 5 minutes
Most thieves use one of three methods of attack.
The first type is a relay attack, which involves "capturing" the signal of a key fob, then replicating it to enter and start a vehicle. Thieves used to hold a large antenna in front of a house door, scanning for keys left inside, but the technology has advanced in the past year, becoming smaller and easier to use at a distance.
Then there is the onboard diagnostic port, accessible via a small door under the steering wheel in all vehicles. Typically used by a mechanic to connect a handheld computer that can diagnose a problem, the access point is being used by thieves to reprogram the car to understand a new key they've made for it.
A screenshot of surveillance footage in July 2022 captured three people trying to steal a vehicle from a Toronto driveway in the early hours of the morning. (Submitted by Patricia Li)
The latest attack method involves the
Controller Area Network
(CAN bus), which acts similar to a nervous system for vehicles, enabling communication between various components of the car. Thieves connect to one of multiple nodes from the exterior of the vehicle, commanding it to unlock and start the engine.
The process may take only seconds.
"It's a weak point," said Natalie Cara of the CAN bus. She's seen her car, a Lexus RX350, stolen three times in less than a year, the first time from her Ontario home in 2022. It was later recovered and returned.
"I asked Lexus what they're doing about this and they said they're working on it."
In an emailed statement to CBC News, a spokesperson for Toyota Canada, which owns the Lexus brand, said it is "deeply concerned" about the impact of theft ...
You're assuming the thief can drive a manual
There was a recent news story of a mid-day car theft at a gas station where the 3 kids jumped in a WRX and could not drive away. They just ended up running away. How much of this article apply to our 20yo cars? I don't know at what rate an old 911 is stolen but I can imagine it's got to be a PITA to get rid of an older car like that. What if someone asks about the IMS or bore scoring!?
The standard key for a 996 is not "as" vulnerable to rfid antenna game described, since the key has both a transmitter to unlock the car and the pill / chip in the key that has a range of about 4" to use.
The push to start cars are at risk... .
But that being said, something like 80% of cars made ofter 2006 are stolen with tow trucks.
A fellow dentist had her Lexus RX350 stolen from the parking lot at the mall. I asked if she dropped her keys, and she said she didn't, so this is how they must have stolen it...
Good thing my newest car is a 2008....

I live in Toronto. I am also surrounded by Porsches, Range Rovers, Gwagons, Luxus.
Park in the garage. Regardless of your worth, I would suggest that dealing with a stolen car is less appealing than keeping the 40 year old couch in the garage that you may need one day. My neighbour in front has 2 brand new Range Rovers. Both are always in garage.
And the Lexus thing, don't buy them. My old next door neighbour had 2 stolen in a year, sTill got another and one for his wife.
Pull Fuse C1 and put in your pocket, install a hidden flip switch that only you know where it is hidden ( wired to disable) , always turn steering to near full turn before turning off and locking steering..
I'm sure these are not at the top of the list of most often stolen cars since there are an overwhelming majority of Honda's, Toyota's, Lexus' etc, however I wonder how many are stolen per 100. I mean, is it even a thing for people to steal a 996? Obviously it can't happen but hopefully it's not a particularly attractive target for whatever reason.
