Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm in the process of buying a 03 C2 and the owner said that the car actually starts out in 2nd. gear? It is a trip tonic automatic and he said that 1st. gear is actually used for "manual" and the car actually starts out in 2nd. I asked if it's "doggy" then and he said not at all. Do this sound right? My 991 doesn't do that..

POST 2Original post

Correct, 996 tiptronic in D drives off from standstill in 2nd gear.

POST 3Original post

Hardtailer is correct. It is not doggy at all. After the engine warms up (meaning oil pressure gauge has come down from its cold reading) creep along and then punch it. These Mercedes tiptronics react quite well. It will go right to redline before shifting if you keep your right foot glued to the floor.

POST 4Original post

Tap the tip button "-" when stopped and it'll start in first gear, even with the shifter in "D". You might need/want to upshift into 2nd with the button too.

POST 5Original post

Punch it at a dead stop and it starts in 1st. No drama, it just goes.

POST 6Original post

I've noticed that If I back up and then put it in drive, it starts in first gear. I'm not sure why they engineered it that way, but it is consistent. Even if I back up and turn off the car, it will start in first the next time I start it.

POST 7Original post

I always have to back it out of our short driveway, and noticed this too. Glad to know it's normal.

POST 8Original post

I've also noticed that the colder it is outside, the longer it will start in first gear. I guess it's waiting for things to warm up.

POST 9Original post

All those old MB gearboxes are like that. It's the same on the old R107 SLs too. Unless you force it into first, do the reverse thing or hammer the gas, it'll be in second.

This. Just tap either button with your thumb and it will drop down to 1st if that's what you prefer. Starting in 2nd is to save fuel, apparently.
