Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, I inspected my oil filter and found an o-ring amongst other things. I also pulled off the sump plate and found another one. Was wondering where these came from and if this is a sign of something wrong or about to fail. In addition to the o-rings there was what appears to be sump liquid gasket pieces (bigger black pieces in pics above) so I guess no worries there? No signs of metallic flecks in the oil but there were these two metal pieces in the filter which are ferrous. Possibility from the piston skirt? They are silver one side and dark the other. 5mm long. Only two pieces in the filter, and none anywhere else. Thoughts? THere was also strange pink pieces in the filter, non ferrous. I'm checking the bores tomorrow with an endoscope. Any input on any of the above is greatly appreciated. Thanks! JT

Can you share some history, in particular engine work, and year of car? Might help some of the resident authorities here share their thoughts.

POST 4Original post

The shop that replaced the cam actuators likely didn't;t pull the sump to remove the pieces of the failed actuators that led to the replacement. You are now likely finding these parts.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hopefully you are right. I'll keep an eye on the filter on the next service.

POST 6Original post

Those round things look like circles of gasket sealant, not O-rings. Same deal though. The installer didn't put the sealant in the right place - installation error.
