It's time for me to change the oil in my C4S, as I'm coming up on the 5,000-mile interval on the DT40 I put in in April.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's time for me to change the oil in my C4S, as I'm coming up on the 5,000-mile interval on the DT40 I put in in April. This car is my daily driver, and I'm going to be driving it this winter. Temps will be hangin' in the teens in January/February. I always try to drive the car around until it gets to up to temp before I put it away, but that's not always an option. I'm concerned about the extra wear of short trips in cold weather on this high-mileage car (133k). Should I opt for different oil for extra protection this winter, or should I just stick with DT40? Is there anything else I can do to help mitigate excess wear? I know to drive the car as soon as I start it, not to let it warm up at idle. I don't have a heated garage. Are there engine block heaters available for these cars?
I'd keep doing what you're doing. I think the bigger issue with cold temp is moisture build up. This can manifest itself in a mayo like residue in the oil fill tube. I'd ensure you drive the car enough to have it reach full operating temps and then some as much as you can. This will help you burn off any residual moisture that will form inside.
I drove my car through a cold winter (teens to twenties) last year with DT40 and had no issues. I also typically did very short trips, and like Pete said you might get some moisture that results in white sludge in the filler tube. I found that making sure I got up to temp at least once a week fixed this.
I absolutely wouldn't install a block heater even if you could somehow find one. You'd have to live somewhere crazy cold for it to make sense on a gas engine, but for sure temps above zero the only thing I'd even consider plugging in is a diesel and even then most modern diesels do a good job starting without them (I know that's not the only reason to plug in).
Pardon my Q, but how is DT40 oil better? A quick Google search led me to a specific brand named DT, but is it better than other 0W40 oils?
Thanks

DT40 seems to be the go too oil for many here on RL. If it's working for you and many RLsters, then why not keep using it.
In answer to your question on... If there is anything else you can do to mitigate excessive wear...
The guys gave you a few pretty good thoughts. But since it's an all weather daily driver that looks like you will put on about 10k miles a year since you put on 5k over the past 6 months, consider doing a couple of things.
1. Changing your oil every 2.5k miles not every 5k. Importantly, change it right before the cold weather months and right after. Fresh oil is good oil, especially in the winter months.
2. If you haven't already, replace your fuel injectors.
3. Always run good fuel from big oil.
4. Start an oil testing program to see what is in your used oil.
5. Drop your sump to see what's bits may be in it, check your oil filter after every oil change to see what's in it, and scope your bores to see their condition. If you have a problem you probably want to know so you can implement the proper procedures for longevity. If you don't have a problem, you can celebrate with another oil change.
The M96 engine is a durable piece of machinery if you keep your oil clean and keep the parts fresh.
Hope it helps.
If you guys haven't read the "progress on digital temp gauge" you may want to take a look. This oil temp gauge should provide a good reference as to when your oil is heated up enough to burn off the water in the oil in cold weather. Not to mention it will tell you if your oil is overheating as well on the track. Good preventative medicine all around.
