Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Car is a 2003 C2 6spd w/50K miles. I have developed a rattle from the driver's side rear, which sounds to me to be coming directly from the muffler-area. After some searching I see that this is not terribly uncommon for the mufflers to begin to exhibit this behavior, but I also see that the cats can do similar things. I have no codes, I would think if it were the cat it would throw a code....maybe not? That said, it really does sound like it's coming more from the muffler-region. Anyone have any tips/tricks to isolate which is the culprit? Any other thoughts as to what it could be, possibly unrelated to the muffler? Thanks.

POST 2Original post

I'd get under there and tap around (lightly!!) on the exhaust system with a rubber mallet.

POST 3Original post

Mechanics stethoscope is often helpful to isolate a rattle. Probably the internal baffles on the muffler.

POST 4Original post

If you do your own work, very easy to remove the muffler, loosen up the connector from the catalyst to muffler, remove the 3 nuts from muffler to muffler bracket and remove rear tire, slide pipe from connector and remove muffler toward rear tire opening. no need to remove the tail pipe. now you can shake for lose baffles.

POST 6Original post

In process of changing Cat. Rattle when warm. Tap it with rubber mallet while rattling and stops for a bit. Remove and it is physically apparent that material is moving around. just need to find time to get replacement in.
