He suspects that the dealer used the wrong oil grade (since it had a Pennzoil sticker from the selling dealer) that is causing the tick.
Leading evidence: 'Use wrong oil grade (since it had a pennzoil sticker' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill after sitting' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Did he remove sump plate and inspect cylinder for scoring?

I asked if the engine was ticking but he said nothing major and he did hear a slight tick but it was probably because of the wrong viscosity oil that was used during the last oil change by the selling dealer.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I would like to thank everyone who has been giving me guidance on purchasing a 996 911.
I finally found one and put a deposit on it yesterday. The car is 700 miles away so I am purchasing site unseen and is dependent on the PPI to make my decision.
I found a 1 owner 02 C4S with 57k miles on it yesterday at a non Porsche dealer and I immediately requested for a PPI by Autometrics Motorsport of North Charleston.
The PPI came back clean and only a few minor issues were found.
I spent a good half an hour on the phone with the tech who performed the PPI and he said mechanically it was sound. Range 1 over revved quite a few times but only 1 range two was detected. No stored code in the system as well.
I asked if the engine was ticking but he said nothing major and he did hear a slight tick but it was probably because of the wrong viscosity oil that was used during the last oil change by the selling dealer.
I am now starting to worry as the sales man sent over a video of the car starting up and I did hear some engine ticking noise in it. I have researched this but the more I read, the more confused I get. Not sure if it is bore scoping or normal noise. I would assume the tech would be able to pick up if it is bore scoping.
I think I am just over paranoid at this point.
Below are the videos:
Cold Start (I think I heard the tapping at the later part of the video):

Engine warmed up (I think the tapping actcually went away after the car warmed up and especially at the end of the video):

Thanks all.

+1 on lifters needing to fill after sitting. Had a buddy flatbed his 996 to the dealer because off ticking and was told this was normal after the car sat all winter.
I have a question on the "warmed up" video. If the car was already warmed up why was the SAI pump running, the idle was above 1000rpm and the temperature gauge still at bottom of gauge? That all indicates to me a "cold" start!?
Good question. I assumed it was warmed up since I asked the dealer to take one for me.
Either case, does the car sound ok?
I may be just too paranoid. Thanks.
Hm, the car is at Rick Hendrick of Fiat or at the Jeep location.
I doubt they will let me have a 2nd PPI.
I just forwarded the videos to Autometrics to review.
I just spoke to Autometrics (they do sound very professional and thorough).
The tech saw the videos and confirmed that is a top lifter tick. He also heard that but after a short drive, the noise went away. He suspects that the dealer used the wrong oil grade (since it had a Pennzoil sticker from the selling dealer) that is causing the tick.
He did not see any white smoke coming out of the car sitting so he do not believe it is a bore scoring issue.
He recommends to use marvel mystery oil for my next 2 oil changes and that the noise should be gone.
He mentioned that if he heard a different much harder noise, he would be worry and also if the tick stayed the whole time.
I am a little bit at ease but hope this information is also useful with future buyer.
Autometrics knows their stuff though. If anything get a extended warranty. Not through Rick Hendrick though. I would never trust them for that. I would get the longest warranty possible bc it will be a lot cheaper than a new motor
Thanks Trendy. Yeah, the tech at Autometrics is very good. He honestly do not think there is anything to worry about and he would have only worried if the sound did not disappear after the oil is able to get through the system.
If it is the worst case scenario, bore scoring and such. What would be the cost to address so that I am planned for it.
I am not sure if there is any insurance company that would insure a 2002 porsche.
Thanks.
How did he determine its a lifter? Did he remove sump plate and inspect cylinder for scoring? Failed cylinders will sound the same as a bad lifter.
its $18k to DIY the rebuild. Expect to pay closer to $20k+ for a shop to properly rebuild a motor from scored cylinders.
That is not true at all.
My car would sometimes smoke on cold start up, but it never ever smoked while it was warm. I could start and stop it 100 times while that motor was warm and 0 smoke. I tracked my car with cylinder 4 & 6 absolutely toast - 0 smoke. On long, hwy trips the car would barely burn oil.
This is my motor, Cylinder 4 & 6 are done - as you can see:

That 1st video has noise that is consistent with a scored cylinder. The 2nd video isn't being pointed in the right direction to capture the noises from the cylinder.
Unless he has opened up the sump and scoped from the bottom, I would not believe anything this tech says. i've been through this - if you have the chance to do it - walk away - or be prepared to spend $20K + for a proper rebuild.
I'm not trying to scare you but like I said, I've been in your shoes and If I was there listening to that motor knock like that, I'd be walking away.
I swear I'm not a fear mongerer but I feel like I have been here the last couple of weeks...lots of videos of unhealthy motors being posted
I didnt sign the paper work yet but did pay a down payment on my card for it.
i sent the videos to a local Porsche specialist for a 2nd opinion.
thanks Awdguy for and everyone else for your input.
at this point, it doesn't matter what these "specialists" say. you need a shop to open the sump plate and look at the bottom on the cylinders, thrust side.
if they don't find any scoring, I am wrong and this is good. oh, how I always hope I am wrong!!
