You need a 996 boot for your 996, but can use the 997 **** that was provided.

In my thread for another ****, I presented an option that works by using a shift plate from a tiptronic car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey Rennlist - allow me to introduce myself with a short story...
Do you remember your last perfectly timed down shift?
The procession of blipping the throttle, pulling the shifter and feeling the shove to the back of your head is one of the most visceral driving sensations that remain. Yet long after the world’s motoring lexicon has been rewritten in units of volts and milliseconds, you as the enthusiast driver will continue curating a quickly disappearing art form known as driving a manual car.
So how dare we try to improving upon this sacred experience - Porsche has been evolving their cars from one quintessential idea for the last 60 years, so surely they could do no wrong, right? Unfortunately, marketers and accountants stepped in and asked the engineers to design around spreadsheets rather than driving emotion and it’s how we ended up with a glaring design fault:
The Porsche shift ****.
At some distinct point these became lightweight, constructed mostly of plastic, and a disjointed part of what is otherwise an utterly fantastic experience. The bean counters assuaged us not to worry, because we could fix this with $1100 Tequipment catalog replacements. After 5 years of 997 ownership I thought there had to be a better way - and now there finally is:

Heavy *****
solves this problem by allowing you to add any one of four weighted metal inserts into your 997/987 shift **** of choice, making driving and every single gear shift sublime while keeping your Porsche’s appearance 100% OEM. Here's what you should know:
..
OEM shift ***** alone are flimsy.
The 996 shift **** is mostly plastic and weighs a featherweight ~50g while being almost $300 new from the dealer.
The metal Porsche Tequipment X97 shift **** is better, but costs $1100(!!) and weighs only 125g. You’re also stuck buying the matching ebrake handle.
Aftermarket shift ***** are generally heavier, but you introduce a visually clashing machined part into your interior that is scalding in the summer and freezing to the touch in the winter. No thanks.
Heavy **** shift inserts are the best of all worlds.
You get to keep your favorite OEM leather/alcantara/carbon/wood 997/987 shift **** while having a **** that now weighs 165g - a
3x improvement over stock
. Too heavy? Mix and match inserts for the most optimal feel. Do you have an SSK? With Heavy ***** you'll be able to dial in the perfect rifle-action shift feel in your Porsche.
Heavy **** shift inserts take only 15 minutes to install, have been designed, engineered and hand-cast in the USA to precisely fit inside your 997/987 shift **** and make this single handedly the best and most discreet modification you’ll ever make to your Porsche. Each order comes with easy instructions for install - which is completely reversible and no custom modification required.
Specifically for the 996, it's an easy modification to add a 987/997 shift **** (sold separately) to your car that retains an OEM look. In fact, the 996/997 shift box is the same and the installation is almost identical.
Here's what a 987/997 **** looks like in a 996:
I am currently taking pre-orders for my next batch, which should be ready to ship in about two weeks.
You have to supply your own 997/987 ****
- but these are readily available on eBay for $50-100.
Each set is only $115, and 30 different members have already gotten theirs on the 997 subforum -

Appreciate the feedback. It bugged me forever that I had no reasonable option to keep my interior looking OEM but not paying the Porsche tax on the right part - so here we are about a year later in development
You do know that a lightweight shift **** is a feature? That's why Porsche put the famous wooden shift **** in the 917: it was lighter than the regular *****.
(I agree that the standard 996 shifter is a bit flimsy though.)
Next batch of 40 is here - for the 20 or so active orders and everyone that has inquired, will be shipping this weekend as promised.
If you've installed yours already, would love it if you could post a review!
For everyone else - have about 20 more ready to ship!

996 special - I have a single spare black 997 shift **** available.
Shift **** + Inserts for $250 shipped.
First person to PM me gets the package deal!
I need a shift boot for a 997 shifter as pictured in Post #1 for my 996....the pic with the burgandy console. Can anybody give me a head start on a part number?
My current 996 shifter and boot are all one part.
The 996 boot is actually one piece with the **** - but I actually have three boots ready to go here if you're interested in buying them. Two gray and one black - both OEM 996 shift boots that were removed for prototyping on my end.
I'm not sure we are communicating here....
1) I have a 996, so I know the **** and boot are one piece; I mentioned that.
2) I'm the guy who bought the $250 997 ****/weights from you.
3) I'm looking for a boot that will fit a) the 997 shifter I bought from you and b) the 996 'horseshoe'. My application is the same as the aforementioned picture in your 1st post in this thread.
I think you are saying you have 996 boots. If that's correct, that doesn't help. If you have 997 boots that will fit my 996, I'm interested. Or, a part number for same.
Thanks
997 boots will not fit a 996 - these have a rectangular plastic base which won't work with the horse shoe shaped opening for a 996.
You need a 996 boot for your 996, but can use the 997 **** that was provided.
Since the 996 boot is one piece with the ****, you actually have to cut off the 996 **** to create the boot that will work with a 997/987 shift ****. For 996s that were equipped with Tequipment *****, the boot comes as a separate piece of which I have 3 of these. These Tequipment ***** however were sold as one assembly, so I don't think there's a separate boot part number for them - or at least from what I could tell
Ok, I'm with you up to here. I have a 997 **** from you, but not the associated hardware to make the install look like the picture in post 1 of this thread. Looking at your Method 2 instructions, it looks like I might need up to 3 pieces.....1) shift boot plastic collar in Picture 3. 2) retaining ring and 3) snapping collar in Picture 5. Is that correct?
These parts don't seem to be available separately from Porsche or the 2 dismantlers I checked. Do you have them?
In my thread for another ****, I presented an option that works by using a shift plate from a tiptronic car. Thats without trying anything to fit it perfectly. I plan on matching it up better when I get time, but it would be very easy.

I think this is a great idea - however I would probably have had wrapped the leather around the shift plate and tucked it underneath, similar to the OEM manual horse-shoe.
@HeavyKnobs
Can't do that... the plate is bigger than the bottom of the leather boot by a significant amount. Plus, even if it were big enough, wrapping the leather around the tiptronic shift plate would make it too thick to clip into the console. It's not the same as the manual plate setup. That said, you could take the manual plate and cut out the middle of the boot and tuck it under and then have the **** come up through that. Or, you could cut the boot and attach it to the tiptronic plate that I used. I just was trying to do it without cutting the 993 RS boot. There are a few ways to make it look more seamless, but I haven't gotten around to trying them yet.
