I did actually call the local dealer, but the service writer said they dont repair the roofs, but theyd gladly sell me a new one for around $10k.

it appears that shops in the UK have a lot of experience replacing the cables, and charge about 2 days labor plus parts.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, this is my first post here, though Ive searched the forums for years for tech advice etc. I am now stuck. I have an 03 targa, and over the years it was slower and slower to close. Sometimes it would get stuck, and like an idiot, Id help it along by pushing it closed while pressing the switch. Well it has finally given up the ghost, and wont move at all now. Whats worse, is it is stuck with the passenger side about 1/2 inch down and it wont seal. Ive tried manually cranking it with the tools at the motor, but it wont budge. I took it to a shop that said they could repair it, but after 12 weeks of not hearing back from them, calling every other week for an update with no progress made at all I picked up the car and I am on the hunt for a shop that can take the project on. I have called about 4 shops in the South Bay Los Angeles area, and no one wants the job. Has anyone had a Re-cable job done in Los Angeles? I understand its an expensive job that requires removing the roof and about $500-$700 in parts. Any advice on who to contact would be appreciated!!

POST 2Original post

I wince at suggesting this, but have you tried the dealer? When my Targa had issues, that was my only solution for someone who had knowledge in such a thing.

hi Idaho911! I did actually call the local dealer, but the service writer said they dont repair the roofs, but theyd gladly sell me a new one for around $10k. I did find a shop in Pasadena called House automotive and spoke with the owner who seemed knowledgeable. They agreed to take it in later this month. He said my ballpark figure of 2500-4K was probably accurate depending on what parts will be needed, I.e the motors or just cables etc. it appears that shops in the UK have a lot of experience replacing the cables, and charge about 2 days labor plus parts. Ill update the thread as I go through it all. Seems to be kind of rare that the targa will stop all together.

POST 4Original post

Hey Targameister, I'm curious to hear how your targa roof repair went. Was that shop able to sort it out? What did the problem end up being and how much did it cost? Thanks!

POST 5Original post

Sounds like a DIY job to me. Sorry I cant help you, but Im sure with some research (exploded diagrams etc.) you can figure it out. Judging by the responses youve gotten so far, no matter where you take it, youre going to get a good hard banging sans lube... you make the call!
