I liked them enough that I had another new set installed yesterday

I'm running my second set of Rt660 this year on my z3 coupe track car and a friend is running a set on his e46 m3.

Rotated around car (square setup) and run backwards for a couple of days as well to even out wear.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anybody used Falken RT660 tires on the track and street? If so, what are your thoughts?
Historically I have used Hoosiers on the track if I could find a way to transport them. If I drove to the track, then I would use Sport Cups or Toyo Proxies. Now we have the Sport Cub 2s which are more of a street tire than track tire. Yes they are pretty durable, but take 2-3 laps to warm up on a 2 mile track. The RT660s keep coming up on the screens as a solid and fast track tire that you can also street.
Thoughts? Likes, dislikes. I understand they are as noisy as the Proxies, but have a stiffer sidewall which to me is a plus.
I have an 02 C2. 18x8 and 18x10. Maybe next season will bring more choices with new tires, but we are pretty limited at this stage. Even the new Proxies rear tires aren't available in our 285/30/18 size anymore.
Thanks!
I just had these put on my 996tt and absolutely love them so far. I haven't tracked them but I am running them on the streets on JRZ Rs Pros. I've pushed them pretty hard and have yet to brake them loose. I don't consider them noisy at all. I bought them for the exact same reasons you mentioned. I came from running NT01 and 05 tires. Since they've became so hard to get now is another reason I tried the RT660. I'd say get em!!
Thanks for the feedback. That's good news on the noise and stickiness. At this stage, I am glad we have an option again beyond street tires and Hoosiers.
I miss the original sport cups. Lousy with any moisture on the ground. But they did stick after a lap or two.
Appreciate the info!
Used to run their older tires RT-215 and RT-615s on other cars and loved them.
I am probably going to go with these if I do new wheels. Car is only driven on the street in nice weather.
Appreciate the info. Yeah, I have been doing the same the last 3 years as I have been figuring out next steps in solving for oil starvation/stability and cooling. With the UIDS and LN Oil cooler in the works, I'll be getting back out on the track next year. Hence the need for a next generation tire.
If you get a session in before winter, it would be great to hear a compare and contrast versus the new Proxies you have Sitting there.
Thanks for playing!
I'm curious about the Proxies too as this will also be my very first time trying Toyo tires. The Falkens are going on a M5 and the Toyos are going on a e30.
I won't be tracking either car, just spirited weekend driving but I'll be happy to give a review. Besides having different suspension geometry, the e30 is about 700lbs lighter so it might be comparing apples to oranges though.
Nice!
I had the earlier version of the proxies with V shaped groves. Sidewalls were a little too soft for me. Couldn't feel the track. But they were very sticky and warmed up very fast.
On the street, they were plenty sticky from the first minute of use. Even during cold days. Abs never went off on the street.
I’ve got a few days on my RT660. Mind, they are on a much smaller, lighter car than my 996, but I’ve been very impressed. Come in quickly and don’t seem to over heat too badly, even when abused, and they were abused. This is 9 lapping days, and and an autoslalom on a 2300lb car. Rotated around car (square setup) and run backwards for a couple of days as well to even out wear. This first pic is the worst. Others wore without too much peeling. I will tell you that the centre block wears tapered. You might see it in the other pic.
Thanks JTT for pointing out the center wear.
What were you running on your car before the RT660s? Any compare and contrast? Did you like them? Would you buy then again as your first choice?
There are my first set of decent tires on this particular car. I liked them enough that I had another new set installed yesterday
Mind, options out there are limited these days.
On my 996 I’ve run older Falkens FK453 - good, inexpensive street tire. Didn’t like the heat at track, but gave lots of audible warning they were getting too hot.
Michelin PSS - again, fine for street, but couldn’t take heat at the track and actually started to crumble and delaminate at outer edges. Thought maybe it was an anomaly, so tried a second set and same result....stick to street.
I now have PS2 (yeah, I know, old tech, but on old car too) but haven’t taken them to track, so really can’t comment on their track performance. They are great on the street though! Quiet and wearing excellent. Even though they are supposedly softer than the PSS, they have surpassed max mileage I got out of two sets of PSS and still look great.
JTT, thanks for the details. I am looking forward to trying them out. Falken has a lot of years of ALMS and IMSA racing and development experience on the 911. Hope the RT660 ends up being a successful solution for us.
I'm running my second set of Rt660 this year on my z3 coupe track car and a friend is running a set on his e46 m3. I love them, great grip and they take abuse well. My friend with the e46 does not. His car is about 3100lbs and the 275 tires are deforming after about 3 full track days. I can say with certainty that they have more grip then RS4 tires and maybe even RE71, and they should last longer then AO52 (but not by much). My car is just under 2700lbs and tires get worn after about 10-13 hours. This is all on track, zero street driving.
Thanks Kondata. What are your thoughts on the AO52. What I read is they have great grip, but soft sidewalls and not a lot of track feel, which is what I experienced on the V tread proxies.
Never used Ao52's, just gauging off of what I see with similar cars that use them. For the money, its tough to justify AO52, but we also have racing organizations that wont allow AO52 in the street tire class lol (while RT660 is becoming the "spec" tire). For all out grip, especially in something like Time Attack, hard to beat AO52. For the money, almost impossible to beat the value of RT660 so long as you're ok with them not lasting long.
