At the time of the last oil change the IMS was done, the RMS was and they replaced the torque seal, and replaced the coolant overflow tank.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My new to me 2000 Carrera Tiptronic Cabriolet had the IMS solution performed 3000 miles ago because during a routine oil change there were metal shavings found in the oil filter. Today I did an oil change and was glad to see no metal shavings anywhere, however I did notice something weird. There appeared to be some reddish rubbery material in the filter, they were very thin. What you see in the photos are the extent of what I recovered from the oil filter. At the time of the last oil change the IMS was done, the RMS was and they replaced the torque seal, and replaced the coolant overflow tank. Can any of these service items be the source of these rubbery items?

Color looks like the pads for the timing chains. Since you have a 5 chain engine, this is a bit of an involved process to change them out.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok here is the $1,000,000 question… Is it bad? Should it be immediately addressed?

POST 4Original post

Thats gasket/sealer material (probably red permatex)...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok. That makes me feel a little better. Looking at the bead after the thin part of one of the pieces I’m thinking you may be right.

POST 6Original post

If its squishy, its not tensioner pad material. Those are hard. Your is gasket or sealant most likely.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well further investigation is beginning to lead me to think it is the pads for the timing chains. I found this thread on the forum. The photo below (from that thread) has convinced me I may have to address this problem. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-backward.html

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for being patient with me guys. I have a better photo below. As you can see the material is VERY thin. As thin as a sheet of paper and it is elastic. It stretches a bit. if it is chain guide pad material there wasnt very much of it collected in the filter.

POST 9Original post

If it streches, even a little bit, its sealent. The pads r very rigid. Stop panicing.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Indeed! But whats Porsche ownership without a crisis from time to time. After some thought Im thinking it is RTV sealant. Not necessarily the worst thing unless it clogs up an oil passage. Im going to monitor oil pressure and do another oil change at 1000 miles to see if there is any more debris.

Those photos do look like darkened red Permatex. One picture looks like a piece of chain pad though. Regardless, those are still sizeable pieces that made it to the filter so you will want to drop the pan to look at the pick up screen, where the baffles connect to the pan, etc. Hoping it's just excess from a sloppy prior job.

POST 12Original post

Looks like one of these..VVVV I got no idea how it ended up INSIDE the engine..lol IMS seal Elring brand

I would agree with everyone that hard plastic is the chain guide, but anything rubbery is sealant. I would also be interested in how much is caught in the oil take up screens. That is a big piece to make it to the oil filter. What's in the oil pan? Best,

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
