Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello folks, I recently inherited my fathers 2003 C4S with 35k miles. He was the original owner. The car joins my Macan S in my garage. I have always done most of the maintenance on my cars and i like that there the 996 is still very much a DIY car. I really enjoy doing my own work as well as the cost savings. The car has had the IMS replaced with the LN Engineering bearing around 2018 along with the clutch. i reviewed all the records i could find an also see the water pump has been replaced. It doesnt look like the AOS has been replaced. Recently i changed the oil (Motul) and filter and flushed the brake/clutch fluid. I also removed the front bumper to clean the radiators. The car had the 15k inspection and work but other than what has been listed above mainly oil changes. I plan on driving the car 1-2 days a week. I bought a manometer to check vacuum on the oil cap to evaluate how the AOS is doing. I am planning on doing the following over the next couple of months: -Transmission fluid change -Front diff fluid change -spark plug change -radiator flush Is there anything else i should check or have checked to stay in front of issues that might pop up? Ive read about bore score inspection. Any advice from the brain trust is appreciated. I really am enjoying the car and plan on keeping it in the family, it has the sports exhaust so sounds really good. My father is still around by the way, he is just 86 with some underlying health conditions and didnt feel comfortable driving the car like it should so i volunteered to fill that role!

POST 2Original post

Wow, sounds like a great car and you know what you are doing, only a couple of things came to mind: The foam sealers or panels in the heater system tends to decompose and blow black particles out of the vents. It's now happening on my '02 C4S. Not sure what can be done as a preventive measure, but apparently it is one of those --- will happen to all of us. Injectors: If I recall there may be a theory that bore scoring is exacerbated by poorly performing injector spray pattern. So maybe get them professionally cleaned -- I've been considering that but will probably take a first shortcut and put some Techron in the tank next fill up. And then you may know ... in the coming years needs oil change every 5K miles or close to that.

POST 3Original post

How old are the tires and battery? Might want to start fresh with some new tires and a new battery.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Tires look in good shape. He had replaced them a few years ago and i have not seen any dry rotting. The car does have after market 19" wheels (305s on the rear) that are a little big for my taste. I prefer more rubber but they still look good. I keep a battery tender on it and seems relatively healthy.

Great car. Kudos to you and your Dad! If you want to be preventive for just driving around the street here is a list of a few things in addition to what you have already done. We can talk track "to-dos" later if interested. 1. Assuming you have a couple thousand miles on your oil, test your oil. It will give you clues as to what is floating around in your oil and therefore engine part wear. You can find the kit on LN's website. 2. Get your cylinders scoped for borescoring. It will tell you the condition and if you may or may not have a problem brewing. This allows you to adjust your oil specs if needed. 3. Replace your fuel injectors, spark plugs and ignition coils if they haven't been replaced over the last few years. You can find deals every week thru the various vendors. 4. Check your engine air filter and replace if needed, clean or replace your MAF sensor, and clean your throttle body and plenum. 5. Replace your AOS which is brittle with the UAOS. 6. Check under your battery for rust. 7. Depending if your Oxy sensors have ever been changed, you may want to consider changing them. 8. Get the Durametric software so you can check and clear codes on your own. In addition, change your oil frequently. At least 2x a year before winter and in the spring. Fresh oil is everything in helping to prevent bore scoring. Lastly, don't baby the car. She need to be driven frequently between 4-7k rpm. Builds her muscles and keeps her healthy. Many other things you can replace, but these will help to keep the engine healthy.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for the feedback GC996. I just changed the oil a couple of weekends ago and will check it in a couple thousand miles. While the oil has been changed on a regular mileage schedule not so much on timeline so it was a few years since the last oil change which was one of my concerns. Im in San Diego so no winter here to speak so will drive year round. I think Ill get an indy shop to bore scope the cylinders as you suggested and start doing the other replacements in due time. Fortunately i live on a beautiful windy road in the local wine country and do stretch the legs out when its clear. Just need to be cautious with the cliental leaving the wineries.... About a month ago their was a young lady who lost it in her Boxter (she was ok, car not so much).
