Unless that check sequence works too with a resistor plugged in instead of the actual airbag module.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I recently got a 911 off BAT. I noticed the steering wheel definitely has some space to push in on the middle. Is that normal? Being as thats where the airbag is, Im concerned someone took it out to sell and I have no airbag.
Ive attached a photo of me pressing it in. Is that normal? 2003.
Does the red airbag light come on? I have a '00 and it's the 3rd light from the right. First light to turn on when key is turned before acc, and first to turn off. Does your horn work? My horn will sound with very little pressure.
You might be missing the airbag. That module is stout and you can’t push in on the cover at all with an air bag behind the cover. Pop the bag cover off. Disconnect the battery, wait a few minutes, put the key in and turn to ignition 1 or 2 to turn the wheel 90 deg. There’s a small whole on each side of the back. Slide a small, skinny flat tip screwdriver in about 4” and unclip the retainer. Turn the wheel 180 the other way and unclip the other side. Plenty of good videos on the web to help you. Takes 10 minutes and you can confirm.
What BAT auction was it? You want to see the red airbag light come on for a couple seconds telling you the circuit is good, same for ALL the other lights. Any that don't come on at all have a bulb problem. If no airbag present or other issue, the airbag module will keep the light on telling you to get it serviced. Looks like someone may have disabled the bulb or covered it with tape. Like NYPOWR4 said, illegal to sell a car with SRS non-op, at least in my state it is. If it was a dealer they might be concerned about being reported, a private party? maybe, maybe not.
Sorry misunderstood about the airbag light.
it comes on for a few seconds with all of them but then turns off after a few seconds while others remain on.
I stopped by Porsche dealer and the service guy was really surprised that it was soft and didn't think that was normal. We ended up finding a 996 that was in for service to see how it compared... and it was also soft (video attached). So I'm not really sure anymore.
I tried taking the wheel off but I could not get the screw loose.
So what do you see regarding the airbag check light at startup?..
Does it come on, does it stay off...
ETA: sorry, just noticed your post with video. Looks like an operative SRS system to me.
Unless that check sequence works too with a resistor plugged in instead of the actual airbag module.
Time to get the cover off
Mine is soft in the center. My airbag light functions as normal and illuminates on start then turns off after it runs its check.
I also had another 996 sport steering wheel that was soft in the center and was actually so soft that the previous owner might have pressed too hard and split the vinyl.
Looks normal to me
