Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

IMS has been changed 7k miles ago with LN retrofit with clutch and rms.

Oh those things that add up are those small italian things like door latches that wont't open because they used bicycle cables to open the doors, etc.

Suggestion
Since no PPI was done maybe a "post" purchase inspection is needed - although I would recommend these to any new Porsche owner.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just recently procured a 1999 996 C4 6-speed, Arctic Silver with 50k miles, gray interior from a local wholesaler. It was an impulse buy. No PPI done but from all the pictures and videos I got from the seller and records, I was sold. It's my first 996, I have owned 3 997s and 2 991s and a GT4 before but never a 996. First impression was "this is a small car" even compared to my GT4 before and can still fit a family of 3 which was amazing. I have been doing some preventive stuff the last 3 weeks, oil change, front diff, brake fluid, cabin and air filters. Coils and plugs going in 3 weeks from now. IMS has been changed 7k miles ago with LN retrofit with clutch and rms. Water pump still original as far as I know. It's so easy to drive, and just user friendly. It's not as much of an event like it's stablemate, a '99 F360, but I didn't buy it for that reason. I am enjoying the ownership so far and enjoying all the recent threads about the 1999 996.
Dream driveway right there. 360 6MT is hard on the list but the recent trends are pushing it further.
Congrats on the purchase, '99 with 3.4L, PPI wouldn't tell you anything can't find yourself on a 20yo car. Enjoy!
Great comparison of late 90”$ I’m sure the Italian tool is more of an event but the P car is the most universal and probably less costly to own and run
great pair good luck
Mike
Congrats! I have similar except a cab with a Tip. Since I'm a relative new what comes to Porsches (learning more and more every day) here's what I have learned so far. My tips...
Since no PPI was done maybe a "post" purchase inspection is needed - although I would recommend these to any new Porsche owner.
1) Get a scanner if you don't already have one. It doesn't have to be expensive as for example Foxwell NT530 (100-200usd) will have Porsche specific live data available - it's not very user friendly but it will do the job. Check first fuel trims etc. Durametric is better option but it requires a pc.
Fuel trims are important because if there's an issue with fuel delivery in any way it will cause engine related issues in the future. Also many things have an effect on the trim values so if there's an issue with MAF sensor, vacuum leaks etc all those will show up on the fuel trim values.
2) Get a stethoscope and go under the car - go though cylinders 1 through 6 in that order and listen any sound that is not found in other cylinders - if all of them sound like each other then everything is ok.
3) top-3 list of things that should be replaced in the future - water pump, fuel injectors, AOS
Cost to run is not even close... Ive maintained both cars, and with the Ferrari if you stop and look at it too long, you can feel your wallet get lighter and hear your bank account draining! Beautiful car(s), but no thanks, not for me...
Thanks!
1. Yes I have scanned it with a Thinkdiag scanner with a porsche update, no codes but I did not look at fuel trims which I will now.
2. No piston slap can be heard on either banks
3. Yes, the water pump is the first to get done soon. AOS and injectors when I need to get the clutch replaced.
The 360 is not as terrible as others think to maintain. Its actually quite a simple car and since its 21 years old, lots of youtube diy stuff available. So far I have done an oil change, transmission/lsd oil service, brake fluid. The coolant I had an indy do it. Those are your annual services according to ferrari, but I think you can push to every other year. The big one which will need a shop is the belt service which is supposedly every 3-5 years/ 15k miles but no engine out needed unlike the 355. Oh those things that add up are those small italian things like door latches that wont't open because they used bicycle cables to open the doors, etc. and you cant replace the cable by itself. Easy $700 job for a door cable, but nothing catastrophic mechanically as long as maintenance is uptodate.
