Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
I had similar issue and it was the starting motor wiring harness.
Leading evidence: 'starting motor wiring harness' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'starting motor wiring harness' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace ...symptoms gone' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

My Indy diagnosed it for me, replaced the harness (I think about $100 for the upgraded harness and a couple hours labour), and it has been great ever since.

Suggestion
Ill be replacing my battery this week in the hopes that cures the almost impossible to turn the car over when hot symptom.

Can also use an inductive Amp meter to measure starter draw.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1999 996, 84K miles; I've owned it about three months. It has a 730 CCA battery in it now, it's less than two years old, Parts store ran a test and it's putting out 729 CCA, so it's good. This battery struggles to crank the car, even though it's spec'd for this application. The next step up is a 760 CCA battery; is this enough? What are the rest of you using? Thanks in advance.
Not sure about that. My Indy diagnosed it for me, replaced the harness (I think about $100 for the upgraded harness and a couple hours labour), and it has been great ever since. I think he said it is a known issue with the 996 (gen 2 anyhow). Maybe you will get additional feedback about it from others on here.
The dealer denies that the wiring harness is faulty. I bought that one about two years ago and im having the same issue again.

730 CCA is more than enough to start the car. Going to a higher CCA rating would only mask the issue, if it did anything at all.
Faulty battery cable is always a possibility. I do know it has been an issue. A voltage drop from the battery to the nearest accessible point in the cable underhood would confirm a good/bad cable.
Can also use an inductive Amp meter to measure starter draw. You could have a failing starter motor. If the starter is faulty, it would be a great time to throw an Air/Oil Seperator (AOS) in there while the intake was off.
make sure you keep track of when it's hard to crank...could be battery could be the starter...or the wire to it. or could be the fuel purge valve or whatever it's called.
This one is not on sale... But very cool & expensive!

update...battery replaced...symptoms gone. I guess compression in the hot engine really saps the power out of a dying battery. I went with a Costco battery with 790cca. 120 C$. while in there I noticed my cabin filters are kinda dirty...so thosell have to get replaced this winter. no good deed hey.
