Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A friend of mine is considering divorce, and she's wondering if a gently-used cooch would be useful to anyone else. It does show signs of use, but (contrary to what the PO indicated), there are several inches of unused material, so it seems a shame to just throw away. It is definitely not in good enough shape to be sold CPO, but I'd hate to see it go for some ridiculously low price on Craigslist. Everyone knows how expensive these are new, so this might be a way for someone to pick up a decent preowned item for way less than retail. I believe the seller is honest, but a PPI might be a good idea just to verify that there are no surprises. Thanks for any comments/suggestions - I'll forward them along. If I do post this as a for-sale thread, pics and a price will be included.

POST 2Original post

It could be very useful What is the condition of the interior and exterior? Has it recently been detailed?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The last time I saw it - I was taking care of it for OP while he was out of the country - it appeared in good condition, with only faint evidence of wear. It was typically stored covered, but not garaged. I imagine any wear could be addressed with a decent moisturizer and some elbow grease. I'll see if I can find some pics, but I'm almost certain it was Arctic White / Guards Red. I may head over sometime this weekend with my Durexometric and verify proper operation. PO was insane about neatness and washed it daily.

POST 4Original post

It depends I've seen leather conditioner work wonders. The trick is to apply large amounts and work it into the folds and crevices. Paying special attention to the more sensitive areas as these areas under proper consideration can offer years of enjoyment and admiration. Also it makes a great place to store a cell phone.

POST 7Original post

I can personally attest with great experience that previously owned means nothing. A bit of attention in the right areas and some loving care is all she needs. Sometimes PO just means all the kinks have been worked out already and there is some good cruising ahead.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If nobody else winds up picking this up, I'm going to try to talk my wife into letting me add this - at least temporarily - to the stable. I get the feeling she's going to nix the idea, though.

POST 9Original post

Yeah, for some reason they tend not favor adding a used cooch to the stable. For the life of me, I don't know why that is. Perhaps it's because they don't appreciate it as much as we do.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

At this point I'm not sure I can afford the additional maintenance, so it'll probably have to go to someone else. Although it would be fun to jump in that thing on the weekends and have a blast.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 12537297

Maybe you should let her drive it once in awhile. Imagine how "date night" will go.

POST 12Original post

LOL. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume double entendre here. Or, maybe after a long day at work, I have a dirty mind? Threads like this make me glad I'm happily married to a great woman. If I followed the advice of this forum, I'd likely have asked for a PPI & service history, and got a butt whippin' for my trouble. T

POST 13Original post

What's the year of production and how many owners has it had.? Be aware leaking problems can be hard to undress , I mean address

POST 14Original post

Be careful. A PPI may not be able to tell if she blew a seal. It can happen, especially on the West Coast or in Northern climates.

POST 15Original post

I'm in the market for a gently used, low mileage cooch. Any pics? Recent mods? Upgraded or bone stock?

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It does seem to leak a bit, especially at high RPM / when running hot, but some Internet sites seem to indicate that this is normal. If it becomes a problem, I'll advise the new owner to look into it. I believe the PO mentioned occasional spluttering and stalling when attempting to check the oil, but I believe that issue is specific to some models; others have no problem with that at all. *shrug* Thanks for the advice, y'all.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

We do TRIPLE entendre up in here.

POST 18Original post

I'm just the middleman here, but I'm happy to broker a relationship for a small fee. Email can be sent to 5chn3ll @ pimp-daddy . net. I can't vouch for how frequently it has been waxed, but I know I've seen a number of different detailing services parked out front from time to time - seems like there was ALWAYS someone working it over when the husband was out of town. Must be nice to come home and find it all cleaned up, warmed up, and ready to go. How truly blessed he must feel...

POST 22Original post

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Oh, crap , I just found out from PO's mechanic that this thing was WRECKED during a massive pileup a few months ago. There was definitely alcohol involved; some of the undercarriage had to be straightened out, and I believe it may actually have a salvage title. Sorry, folks - I thought this thing had a much cleaner history. The carf*cks report is...14 pages long. I'ma definitely pass on this one.

POST 24Original post

Salvage title is ok for me as long as it doesn't have a Rebuilt one...

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Alpy, I'm worried about what you might find in the sump. I thought this was a gem, but...

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Note: If this had been posted in the air-cooled forum, there would be much head-scratching and mutterings. "I don't understand..."

POST 27Original post

That's definitely a problem. You could have a bad oil pump resulting in poor lubrication. Also there is a chance that there may be scored cylinders which could result in the rod getting bent out of shape. Careful!

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ouch! I bet bore scoring makes an unpleasant noise.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 12537417

Great point. Thanks for looking out as usual.

POST 30Original post

I'd say, if you decide to move ahead, finger the sump just to make sure.

POST 31Original post

One area that tends to be overlooked is "logged" hours. I would put it through the paces, check for friction wear, and most importantly make sure it's able to retain fluids. You don't want that leaking as it can be a mess and only seen under a black light.

POST 32Original post

Anyone available to do a PPI and a quick test drive?

POST 33Original post

I wonder if there is way to check overrev codes...

POST 34Original post

If it's anything like previous models I've had in the stable, it will pass the PPI, having shown no obvious defects. The first few months will be euphoric...slowly fading into pleasantness. The initial things I loved about it will soon be the things that bother me the most. After a few years, it will start looking old and tired, and I will begin having thoughts of trading it in for a newer model. But that would be way too expensive.

POST 35Original post

Are the bearings tight, or have they gotten sloppy from lack of lubrication? Would not want to have to deal with a grenaded engine Maybe somone can post the 69 modes of failure for us on this model

POST 36Original post

I think a Rennfax is in order, who's willing?!

POST 37Original post

POST 39Original post

If the previous owner is Asian I'm sure it will be just like new OEM.

POST 40Original post

A little unicorn semen will do wonders for it though. (I'm a little embarrassed that it took as long as post #42 for someone to point this out)

I am a certified Cooch INDY. So if anyone need s PPI I can check it out.. I will inspect for Mulitple over revs free of charge.

POST 47Original post

Love how this thread is twice as long as the clutch thread.

POST 48Original post

Not an air-cooled issue 5chn3ll, moisture-cooled. How is the shaft bearing? Needs replacement? Or true & tight? Perhaps a slight wobble at higher rpm?

POST 49Original post

Well speaking for myself Ive never tried a cooch (new or used) that I didnt thoroughly enjoy. Some more than others but all were nice, even the ones I only tried once. Each time seemed to last only moments but they all resulted in a happy ending. If this one looks a bit rough Im sure a fresh wax job would have it looking at least ten years younger. Let me know what the asking price is.

POST 50Original post

OMG dude, I still cannot believe how spot-on the title of this thread is. 5CHN3LLy, you're a true 996 forum master and I pay my respects.

POST 51Original post

So, I found a video of Dr. Mack Baby performing a pre-qualification inspection on the damaged cooch. Very informative! Nip Tuck Season 5 Episode 3 Eden Lord and Sean McNamara Scene - YouTube

POST 52Original post

+1000000 if someone could have enticed Jake to chime in with the all the various modes of cooch failure. Nobody would want to get within 100 feet of those cooches without a complete teardown and rebuild. Are cooch Nickies a thing?

POST 53Original post

BTW, couldn't 'cooch' be the answer to nearly all of the "Where do you put your *?" posts?

POST 54Original post

Dammit. Went back thru the thread, and both of my jokes were already used before I weighed in. Nice job. You guys are good.

POST 55Original post

Thinking about making a bid. Is there any wiggle room?

POST 56Original post

When the 'for life' factory fill eventually fails, just remember that there are a number aftermarket synthetic lubricants available for older models.

POST 57Original post

But which lubricant is authorized by the factory or is the wrong one is used will void the warrantee.

POST 61 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What do you do if RMS leaks on this unit? Depends.

POST 62Original post

I've heard that on these particular engines, the RMS only leaks after the engine is warmed up. At cold start, there's usually no leak. If there is, it's a roll of the dice.

POST 63Original post

I suppose there are benefits of a used one vs. a new one. No break in, and probably used to being test driven, and left by the curb.

POST 64Original post

Bruce Jenner has shown us that even an old guy can get himself a new cooch.

POST 65Original post

You guys are doing it wrong again. Haven't you learned that renting it is always the cheapest way to go. Anything breaks you just sit tight and call the renter company. They will drop it off to you and haul the broken one away.

POST 67Original post

Quotes source post: 12539826

RMS isn't a serviceable part that can be replaced, however the leak can be mitigated. - find the use that causes the leak and cease it. - use towels, cardboard, or whatever to contain the leak and make it more cleanable. - replace the whole unit In my experence, although helpful, leaks aren't usually a lube issue unless the leak is red color atf fluid (dextron3?) In which case it's more of a underlubed thrust bearing rather than RMS.

POST 68 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Depends. DEPENDS. Get it? Ba-dum. Psh. No offense, Hurdi.

POST 69Original post

Had a thrust bearing issue with a previous unit, ate up the journals, too much clearance, also required a crank grinding.

POST 70Original post

Sounds like the lemon law should have been used.

POST 71Original post

Has anyone thought to check her filter to determine what debris, if any is present?

POST 73Original post

Quotes source post: 12537413

Just remember, it has a rear engine too, so regardless of all the front and suspension damage, the rear may still be good.

POST 75Original post

Quotes source post: 12541400

Every so often when shifting it pops out of gear and the input shaft gets misaligned and jamms. Not a serious problem but can mean taking a break to get the alignment back into position or if the shaft needs to be lubed and conditioned.

Oh? Please share your technique. Or do we have to wait until the book is published?

POST 77Original post

Its in high demand.. So I decided to put it in this book, which will be out in 2 weeks!

POST 79Original post

That looks a lot different than the versions I've Um rented.

POST 81Original post

Would OP kindly confirm that an LS1 conversion has NOT been done? That would be an instant turn-off...

POST 83Original post

Headlights are important to me. How are the high beams on this cooch? Do they appear fresh and undamaged? Are they set to an effective usable height or are they pointing low due to aging suspension sag? Paul

POST 84Original post

Quotes source post: 12545970

Yah -- and I like the high wattage ones.

POST 85Original post

I am sure the filter was changed monthly unless it is a really old model. Does it come with a clear bra?

POST 86Original post

Quotes source post: 12546049

Bi-xenon or Litronic upgrades always nice

POST 87Original post

At what age is the used cooch no longer eligible for preowned certification? I don't think I would be willing to jump in and really ride an out of warranty model. Low mileage, low wear and tear and newer model with a full warranty will really provide a much better overall feeling of satisfaction and ownership. Especially if I plan to pound her as my daily driver! Good history of well maintained and lubricated components really a huge plus!

POST 88Original post

Quotes source post: 12546386

I agree. Some cooch's are known to shed major components during the first 1/3 of life span. This can cause permanent damage and alter critical clearances on tight fitting precision parts which can lead to a loose ride. Paul

Oh, so NOW you all do care about headlights! The secret is out!

POST 91Original post

Quotes source post: 12547042

This is the 996 forum after all right? Once you've dealt with all the leaky and worn bits, it's really all about the headlights...

POST 92Original post

Perhaps this could be an Uber Cooch where you pay by the ride.

POST 95 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Btw, a "thumbs up" in this case might also have a different meaning. Proceed with caution; nobody wants corn stuck under a thumbnail.

POST 96Original post

Just like an intake and exhaust valve shares a cylinder.

POST 97Original post

I would proceed with caution on the Uber Cooch option. While i love the pay as you go option, there is just to much electronically filed usage history out there, especially if you have another model waiting at home in the garage.

POST 99Original post
