Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, I plan on installing the LN filter adapter on my 996. I have only been using 5w40 oil up to this point and the car has only seen 3 months of winter in its life as its a Florida car. I switch off my daily driving between my 996 and Challenger. The nice guys at LN suggested I go to a 0w40 if I'm daily driving in winter but also stated 5w40 wouldn't be a huge issue. If I was in a warm climate I'd go for 5w40 year round. I didn't buy this car to let it sit so my question ultimately is do I need to switch weights depending on season? Obviously winter cold starts would be the primary concern. Thanks in advance

Porsche guidelines call for 0w-40 in ambient temperatures -25C or lower. If this low temperature occurs where you live/drive then you really should use 0w-40 oil. I would be tempted to use 0w-40 oil in the "winter" even if the temperatures were milder, say mostly below freezing. (Here where I live and drive winter temperatures seldom to never drop below freezing so I stay with 5w-50 year 'round. I use 5w-50 in recognition of while winter temperatures don't get too low summer high temperatures often break 100F.) A few owners who live/drive in cold climes have reported issues using their cars in cold weather with other than 0w-40 oil in the engine. Why risk using something else?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I agree, too bad Joe Gibbs doesn't make a 0w40 Thank you for your input

POST 4Original post

This will thin the Gibbs oil, perfect for winter driving.

Here is a picture of a Mobil 1 jug. I find visuals help in oil threads.

POST 6Original post

At the risk of destroying the after glow from your posting I would offer that is a suitable ending for this thread.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I agree, but I put in the olde english into my motor oil as suggested. Now the motor started smoking so I will be flying down to Georgia to speak to Jake.
