Feal can be adjusted for height, both front and rear, without changing spring preload.

In the rear, the bottom must be disconnected, unlocked, and rotated...then mounted again.

i also replaced every bush with power flex & used h&r swaybars at both ends .

I have a set of used H&R sport springs I'd sell cheap.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2001 996 C2 than needs the shocks replaced. I have done quite a lot of research trying to decide which is the best way to go. I would like to lower the car about an inch but I am not sure the best method to accomplish this. My budget is about $1800 so some of the better coil overs are out of my price range. I have looked at the HR street performance coil overs, but not sure as they are on the lower end of the price range if they are good enough. I like the Bilstein shocks and would like to incorporate them into my decision. Option 1 would be to just replace the shocks with Bilstein B4 or B6 and not lower the car.
I don't understand why the B4 are more expensive than the B6. Option 2 would be to install the HR Street Performance Coil Overs and hope the car doesn't drop much more than an inch or so, and provides improved dampening from my stock setup. Option 3, which I am leaning to now, is to replace the stock springs and install the M030 springs with the B8 Bilstein's. This will hopefully lower the car a little and give me good dampening as well.
Any thoughts or additional options?
Thanks

H&R sport springs/Bilstein B8 are engineered to work together, and give you about 1-1.5 drop. The only potential drawback is that this set up isnt height adjustable. So, the question becomes do you need the ability to adjust ride height?
After reading pretty much everything I could find on this subject and after careful consideration for
my
application, I decided on Bilstein B8's and H&R Springs. I'm still waiting on the rear struts to ship before I can have my indy install and align.
My use is strictly street driven and I didn't see a need for the ability to adjust height.
I have a set of used H&R sport springs I'd sell cheap. They were on my Targa when I purchased it. They are for coupes, so I removed and purchased correct Targa/cabriolet springs. Let me know i can get you pics.....
I asked the porsche people at Pelican Parts and they said they heard complaints that the aftermarket lowered springs ended up saging, with the exception of the OEM Porsche M030 springs.
If I remember correctly, there are three levels of factory lowering springs available to fit the Carerra: US M030 at 10mm, ROW M030 at 20mm, and X74 at 30mm.
Coilovers are infinitely height adjustable within their range of adjustment, whereas the H&R springs are fixed height. You can adjust ride height and corner balance with coilovers, you can't with just springs.
The difference is they're not adjustable and less expensive than the H&R street CO's. Also, they're plug and play...
I paid $1228.64 for front and rear B8's and H&R springs. Big difference in cost!
I really like the adjustability of the coil overs and willing to pay the extra bucks, however I am concerned that the performance and dampening will be as good with the HR coilovers as with the ROW M030 springs and the B8's.
Ive had the H&r street performance coil overs for 4 years plus on my car
they are great . German made , and a nice balance of street & track capable
I should note that the gt3 came with a very similar jointly developed h&r bilstein height adjustable coil over as the street performance h&r / bilstein developed units.
Tire rack has good prices on the h&r sp units . $1740

my car previously had row M030 units and the sp coil overs ride and handle much better .
whether you go with lowered springs or coil overs , adjustable drop links & rear toe links are a good idea to get your alignment and sway bar preload spot on
you should budget for new top mounts and youll probably find a couple bushes that need doing
i also replaced every bush with power flex & used h&r swaybars at both ends . You dont need to do this but its amazing
The rear B8 is constantly out of stock and the delivery times seem to always miss the promise date. Not the vendor's issue, its Bilstein. I finally gave up waiting for my rears and found a set at Rose Passion in France. Paid more but got the product. Apparently I got the last set as they went OOS right after my order. Just a little warning in case you are in a rush.
Other than that, I love the combo of the H&R/B8. Lowered my C4S about 1.5". Ride is certainly on the stiffer side, but handling is fantastic.
I went with B6/H&R springs. I spoke to H&R support prior to doing it. They stated it would work fine, and it has after about a year and many miles later.
Oh, I know and luckily I'm in no rush. I hope I can get them by April/May to enjoy for most of the good weather months. Now I'm trying to figure out which sway bars will work best for a C4 and/or if I should wait to drive on the suspension first before making that decision.
I just had my indy install H&R Street Performance coilovers, H&R front & rear sway bars and Tarett adjustable end-links, with a full alignment & corner balancing service on my 2001 996 C2 Cab. I was concerned about lowering >1" so went with coilovers to be able to adjust the height to my preference. My OEM front shocks were toast after 138,000 Km / 86,000 miles - leaking fluid.
Right after the install, the car was lowered about 0.75 of an inch, which will probably increase slightly after the car sits for a while. Currently have my 17" winter wheels & tires mounted so planning to take it back in the Spring once I get my summer wheels mounted.
Initial impressions are a night and day improvement in handling and steering feel, especially at highway speeds. Ride quality is actually improved - definitely not too stiff and absorbs bumps much better than the old ones.
Really glad I followed some good advice I received on this forum. Thanks guys.
I've looked at PSS9's as well as most other coil overs (exception Feal), it would seem to me that the term "height adjustable" is a bit of a misnomer. Maybe I'm mistaken, but it seems all that is really happening with a single collar adjuster, is that spring preload is being increased. This would have effect on ride height, to some degree, but at the expense of piling on preload and if raised too much, coil binding the springs. It seems that the "height adjustment" would function for corner balancing, but not much more.
Seems to me the only way to truly have adjustable ride height would be to have a threaded portion of the shock body that would lengthen or shorten it independent of the springs?
What am I missing?
+1 ^^^ The H&R kits typically are threaded body shocks, with the shaft end fixed and the shock end is adjustable,
the reason you can adjust height is the spring rate is not changing as you raise and lower the collar,
there is no "preload" beyond the weight of the car because your not running the shock out of travel
which is what you'd have to do to get spring preload.
Let them know what you want and I bet they can hook you up.
The front was much higher than stock when we first set it down. We then went back and dropped them about a 1/4 below stock height. Once I get the rears in, I can then play with it.
Feal can be adjusted for height, both front and rear, without changing spring preload. In the front it can be done with the struts still in the car. In the rear, the bottom must be disconnected, unlocked, and rotated...then mounted again.
