That's where the masking tape works well to find the noise since it changes the air flow.

The idea is to use the tape to cover up or streamline the airflow over whatever is making the whistle to help identify what is causing it.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ever since I bought my car I noticed a high pitched whine that starts happening at around 100mph. Its definitely wind related. Is this common on all mk1 996s? If so does anyone know how to get rid of it? Cruising at those speeds becomes annoying because of the whine. It sounds like it comes from the driver side edge of the windshield and accentuates when crosswinds hit. thanks 🙏

POST 2Original post

Drive faster! Seriously, try putting masking tape on or around various trim pieces on the windshield, door trim, or mirror mounts, or where you think the noise is coming from. The idea is to use the tape to cover up or streamline the airflow over whatever is making the whistle to help identify what is causing it. I would not expect Porsche to allow a wind whistle to be common to the 996 or 997. The trick is to locate where. My guess is there might be a tiny gap in a trim piece that is lifting at speed and making the whistle noise.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, Il'l try that tomorrow. I saw a video of a 996 on youtube passing 100mph and it momentarily had the same whine. I thought it may be something that happens on many cars.

POST 4Original post

Has the windshield been replaced in the past? Press against the windshield from the inside with one hand (whilst keeping the car under control...) to hear if the pitch of the noise changes. That would indicate a badly bonded windscreen or one that doesn't sit properly relative to the window frame (too high or low at the top edge for instance)

POST 5Original post

Interesting... I have the same problem, I took it to 140mph and it only got louder too. I'm curious if it'll still be an issue on track with the windows down. Please update us with what you find.

POST 6Original post

That's where the masking tape works well to find the noise since it changes the air flow. Don't have to drive fast and push on the windshield at the same time; it's very hard to do!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I tried pushing the windshield and it made no difference. It start happening around 85mph especially if there are crosswinds. if there is a burst of crosswind the whine sounds during the burst. Il'l make a video tomorrow. Im going to try the tape method.

POST 8Original post

Don't use masking tape, use painters tape. Also I seem to remember that Porsche issued a TSB (technical service bulletin) about this issue. Of course it was years ago but there was a fix, I think about the windshield seal and the cord inside it. Sorry, don't know where to find it. RennTech used to provide the TSB's but not anymore. Maybe a Porsche dealer can look it up.
