POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got tired of the MAF associated CEL codes and bought a stock 996 airbox to replace the K&N CAI that my car came with. First impressions, I miss the intoxicating sound that the K&N produced. Second, my butt dyno tells me the car seems slower. Third, the throttle seems less "crisp" and has a slight hesitation it didn't have before. I had a Porsche mechanic friend drive it for a different reason and without me mentioning it, he said he noticed a slight hesitation compared to before and suggested new coils. I don't think it's that, though. The replacement box came with a MAF installed, and I just left it in there instead of re-cleaning and using my old one. Maybe it's bad... not sure. I think that the problems I had with the K&N usually would start after washing it. I suspect that water gets on the filter through the lid and then the water moistens the oil coat on the filter, allowing it to get to the MAF and starts messing with it. Can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm contemplating reinstalling the K&N. If it was just a matter of missing the sound, maybe an exhaust system would scratch that itch, but it does not feel as powerful. Might be in my head, though. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

If you are going to reinstall the K&N, why not do this: pull car to spot to wash, open engine lid and lay a garbage bag over the engine and filter. I agree, a ton of water goes through the spoiler and soaks the engine bay. I have a stock air box, so what I do after I finish washing, is use my leaf blower to dry the car/wheels and then open the engine lid and blow out the entire engine bay. Great for getting rid of the crap that gets on the top of the engine too.

POST 3Original post

It's a cool experiment. The consequences are almost zero as you own all the equipment and have 2 MAF's. I say do it, use Joe's method to keep water out during washing and report back in a few months. It's interesting data for the grist mill. Butt dynos are critical tools. It doesn't matter how they correlate with reality. Part of the allure of these cars is how they make us feel. Butt dyno, for street cars, is big on that list. I haven't changed my airbox, but I did change the plenum. I will swear my butt dyno says the throttle response is better. But I have no inclination to prove that it is real. Theoretically, better air flow will lead to more power, but the entire system needs to be balanced to see the effect. Open up the exhaust...

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, if I reinstall, I definitely was planning on covering the filter during a wash. I remember the last time I washed it with the K&N on, the first pull my car hesitated bad like it was being choked. A direct result of the water. Then, I got a hot film code for the MAF a few days later. I know the filter wasn't over-oiled, as i had recently cleaned and recharged it myself being very careful not to saturate it.

POST 5Original post

Yes, the intake noise is intoxicating and addictive., and there has much design work has been done to enhance the intake noise on all newer models of all brands. There is an anti-water "sock" you can get from K&N to that goes over an open air filter to keep water out. I built a dozen or so Short Ram open air intakes for 996 and 997 with Lexan/Aluminum heat shields, and incorporated the 991 intake "sound enhancer" designed and Patented by Keet Boon of Mann+Hammel . Nick Named the Banshee. I met Keet through e-mails and he wanted to present my wireless on-off system that turns the Sound Enhancer on and off to Mann+ Hammel for consideration. The intake Sound Enhancer was not real well received by the aftermarket enthusiast, but is widely used and excepted by the lots of Manufacturers such as Porsche on the 991, 992, Panamera, Cayenne and also many performance Ford products ect..

POST 6Original post

I don't know about the OP's hesitation but remember butt dynos are influenced by ear dynos so there is that. Some knowledgeable folks recommend going with the 997 intake box for better breathing.

POST 7Original post

Orange cap mod will help the sound! I recently went from a Fabspeed intake to a 997 Carrera S 3.8 airbox. I did the orange cap mod before installing it and the sound is just as good as the Fabspeed. Butt dyno says it's about the same.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 17183929

Yep, people are heavily influenced by sound. I never understand it.. They'll foul MAF sensors, live with a choppy idle, and live with all the other detractors simply to hear a sound. Not me.

Search eBay for: Porsche 997 airbox. There were 3 when I found mine. I bought the mid priced one because it was complete with hose, clamps, a new air filter, & MAF. I used the MAF that came with it. It tests fine according to my Snap-on scope. I now have my old one as a spare.

POST 12Original post

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 17184816, 17184929

To be fair, I inherited the K&N from the PO and I replaced it with a stock unit. It's a subjective thing, but I do think it sounds better than stock. It's just a manner of speaking.

POST 14Original post

I got nothing against the factory air box, I like it . It has a huge filter element that lasts many miles and is well designed. And with the Helmholtz resonator blocked it sounds really good, but I wanted MORE of that natural intake sound . So I had to ditch the air box to make room for the "sound enhancer" and had to use a Short Ram intake open design to make it all fit. What about temps you say? The factory box after it gets hot, stays hot a long time and heats the air as it passes through, especially after a "heat soak" like stopping for at a fast food for a pit stop. Eventually the factory box will cool down to ambient temp, but takes a while. On my setup the MAF temp is 1 degree above ambient temp at any speed above 40mph, it doesn't get any better than that. If you have both, you can test for yourself with Durametric, but I can't say an Evom or K&N or Fabspeed will do as good as mine does, Jake says they don't and I believe him. And no I don't sell these or make them anymore. They were WAY to hard to install for anyone but a Pro. I built and installed a dozen or so here in Bama,(seen one of the cars this morning on our PCA Annual Polar Bear Run) but after my Triple Heart surgery then retirement had no interest in installing them any more ( or physically able).. The setup did use an off-the-shelf Dual Cone K&N filter that has been on for 80k miles and no MAF failure and fuel trims always spot on.. It was all about the "Banshee Scream" !! And had no draw backs, except wasn't factory. Oh and anyone who doesn't like the Banshee Scream from the intake, probably has a loud exhaust. I have been around drag cars and loud exhaust all my life and am tired of deep loud exhaust ..I like a quite exhaust, and MORE of that high pitch Banshee Scream !! I like the sound of 125cc two strokes screaming at 16k rpm's , F1 cars, and the new GT3's !!!

POST 16Original post

I threw away the K&N PO installed. Installed an oem 3.8 intake box. Don't miss it.

POST 17Original post

I have a "dry" K&N CAI in my 996 and have had no problems w/it whatsoever. Don't notice that it sounds any "better" but it came w/the car and there's no reason to replace it w/the factory box if it's not causing me any problems.

POST 18Original post

They work quite well in the winter.. That's all I have to say. I've already had some jerk message me to say that he didn't appreciate me saying the things that I have here, because it was costing him sales. My response: "When did I start giving a damn about what you thought?"

POST 19Original post

What about the simple fact that these filters allow dirt to pass through easily. All the ones I have owned had traces of dirt in the intake tube after a few miles. I would imagine on a rear engine car that churns up all the road debris this wouldnt be beneficial. Especially with an engine that scores cylinders.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 17185260

While it's true a spoon full of sand will destroy an engine, when it comes to air filters , ALL air filters, whether they are paper, cotton, fabric, foam or synthetic material, will filter particles larger than 10 mircons,.... a sand particle is 63 microns and larger, a human hair is 100 microns. Air filters actually filter better the dirtier they get ( who would have thought it ?) Paper factory air filters ( or others) are replaced when dirty, not because they start letting dirt get pass, but because they start restricting air flow/performance. looking at a wide range of applications, dirt bikes use an oiled-foam filter for high flow and high dirt capacity, outboard /Marine engines use NO air filters.. Being a Dealer Technician and Motorsports Enthusiast for over 45 years I have read all the Science, seen the real world applications, and my advise is to get all the Science/knowledge and follow these three rules. 1. use common sense 2. Don't sweat the small stuff 3. It's ALL small stuff...

POST 21Original post

Over oiling the filter is why some people have MAF issues...

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 17185260

This nailed it. When we've tested these set ups they do make more power initially, because the filter doesn't filter anything until it collects some debris in operation. In every single case I have been able to re- test a few weeks later back to back, all the extra power the set up gave had been erased, since the filter was actually doing a better job than it was initially. At the end of the day you don't see these things on my engines for many reasons. At one time I had contemplated making our own, but then I considered that we can make 480HP with a stock 997 3.8L filter housing, so my focus needed to remain elsewhere.

I replaced the plenum and my buddy sent me a pic of the runners... covered in green foam particles. I've used the dry KN on a couple cars afterward but really stay away from oiled type filters.

POST 26Original post

I have pics and video of a typical K&N set up that was used in a Boxster. It killed 3 MAF sensors in less than a month. I think this may be a good topic for a Rennvision LIVE this week.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source posts: 17185825, 17185570

The oiled-foam air filters are only used when there is no room for a larger (paper) type filter or when high dirt capacity and high flow are needed.(dirt bikes) and they do deteriorate more quickly and you have to be more careful with the foam-oil combination . I have been involved in dirt bike racing for decades . My Grandson just won the SECCA series C250cc class (on a YZ125) and the "overall C-Class" (Banquette last night). We use Twin-Air foam filters and No-Toil air filter oil. Keep 2-3 already cleaned and oiled on hand and change every race. We get about 50 cleanings/oilings from a filter before it's trashed. I hate cleaning and oiling filters !!! That said my Dual Cone filter has 80k miles on it never cleaned or oiled and is filtering better than ever. We have MAF sensors on our cars that will show any decrease in air flow ( on record in this forum at 213.4 grams/second) and I monitor mine regularly..At about 100k miles or whenever I see a decrease in MAF flow I will just replace it (not clean and oil as I hate doing that ) Yep, over-cleaning and over-oiling will do more harm than good, that's why I have never cleaned or oiled mine in 80k.... yea, it's not a dirt bike...lol

Is the 997 3.8 airbox a straight drop in for a 996.1 stock airbox?

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 17186886

Nearly. I had to trim a bit of plastic on the bair box to clear the decklid latch. Since I wanted to use the 997 snorkel, I swapped the oem SAI pump bracket with an EVOM one for more clearance and changed the snorkel "gasket" that's clipped on the bottom of the decklid to properly seal the new snorkel. You can skip the new SAI bracket and snorkel gasket if you use the 996 snorkel.
