Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just got a 1999 C4 and it is my first 911. It has about 120,000 miles and I thought that the ride can be improved by changing the shocks. I only drive on the streets that are pretty uneven and would like it to be a little more forgiving (rear smooth although it is a Porsche 996 so I don't expect like an SL). Anyway I have read a lot of posts and of course there are a lot of opinions. Two questions. 1) should I replace the whole coil over or just the shock. 2) any thought on the one to buy? Thanks

POST 2Original post

If it were me, and I wasn't interested in adjustability and track performance, I would just replace the shocks/struts, top mounts, and any rubber pieces. Then I would replace the lower control arms(coffin arms) & control arm links.(Tuning links) You might as well replace the sway bar bushings while you're in there. Then get an alignment. That will make you car handle MUCH better. All of that is pretty moderate DIY. (You'll likely need to rent a strut compression tool)

POST 3Original post

If you're looking to just "REFRESH" the stock ride stick with Bilsteins (the stock shocks/struts are B4's) if you want to lower the stance you'll need lowering springs and B8's. There are TONS of threads dealing with the same or similar question to yours - do a forum search and read, read, read... Unfortunately, some of the threads tend to have a "flavor of the month" feel to them - while some of these "flavors" are no longer available, you'll get a good idea of what works for given situations and why. After you spend some time reading I'm sure you'll have more specific questions.
