I could use a driver's side seat-adjustment switch assembly.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I killed my 40th. Wish it was a story of pushing the car to the limits, but as turns out it was a bit of bad luck during the start of my commute home last week. Damage to both front fenders, one of the front control arms was split in half, one wheel hanging off at a fairly obscene angle. No airbag deployment, so the interior is unscathed. X51 m96 Motor is solid with 55k miles(LN IMS, RMS, water pump @ 50k miles), tranny is good(new clutch @ 50k miles). PPI is from 2k miles ago and was good to go.
Story will be shared once insurance wraps up, but as it turns out I have a chance to buy it back. I'd like to part her out (or sell her as-is to someone), but would like to gauge interest in the parts/car before making a decision. So this is a "gauge interest thread." Let me know...
is it a manual transmission car?
would need some bits, also to get a broader perspective, you could post pics of the car before damage and then see the interest depending on "goodies" etc
why not try to repair it? from your story doesn't sound too bad...
really that bad (considering Airbags are intact) probable structural damage? if those are just the outer shell parts then those are easily replaceable,
I assume no front lights as well then.
Glad to hear you are okay. As much as it sucks that such a nice car (low mileage 40th) is destroyed, you and anybody else involved is okay... So look at the bright side, you get to go car shopping. . . is another 996 in your future?
I would think that depending on what the insurance company offers you could probably do fairly well selling the motor / tranny / etc.
Without pics it's difficult to judge, but if you can buy it back reasonably, you should consider straightening the frame and driving it with a salvage title. If you decided to sell it intact, I would be interested. We recently converted a totaled a 40th to a full race car, and my avatar is a special order 03' with the X51 option ($17k). Know that you'll be inundated with calls from the salvagers like LA Dismantlers, etc. Blood in the water and all that....
Bummer.
Why would you buy the car back?
Do you really want to go into the Porsche salvage car business with just one totalled car? Having people come by your house to pick of the carcass of the car? Make a mess of your driveway? Or wherever you have the thing parked?
Get as much money for the car as you can and run away and never look back.
Might be fun to disassemble... it's been a while since I've pulled motor out of a car. It was also a solid car and I would like for the components to end up in good hands. And if i can come out ahead in the whole scenario, that would help with the next purchase.
That being said, I hear you loud and clear, and appreciate the perspective.
I will buy sport seats if you have them! Also interested in center caps if they're in good shape, and a bit of interior trim.
Would potentially be interested in the transmission depending on the price. I don't need one (yet) but probably will eventually once I get to 400k miles of autocrossing.
Sorry to hear about your Porsche. I too totaled mine three weeks back. After settling with insurance I was able to buy it back for the salvage price. It's already sold. It was a 99 C2 with Aerokit and 32k on engine. Not X51.
Waiting for their transport company to pick it up from my garage. I guess the worst part is looking at it every day.
Bummer that your 40th was wrecked, but as mentioned the good news is that you came out intact. Looks like the sharks are already circling the 'car-cuss' which may be a good thing unless you want to buy it back and restore yourself. If not I'd bet you would do pretty well based on the replies and interest.GL
1st off im glad you walked away un-harmed, Sorry to hear that 1 of 1963 40AE is now gone...
Not too many are left in the world. What # was it? Mine is #678.
The engine and tranny are the big dollar items. After they're gone then you can spend years selling off the rest of the car and while you may (may) come out ahead chances are there'll be only your heirs to thank you for your effort.
As for the parts ending up in good hands, I understand the sentiment (to a point) but no way you can vet everyone that comes to your house to buy a part off the car's carcass to ensure they are worthy of the part.
OTOH, I have found it is best to develop a certain detachment when engaged in these kinds of things.
When I go to sell a used car, motorcycle, machinery, something that at one point I valued very dearly (or I would not have spent my hard earned money buying it) when it comes to sell the first person that shows up with the money gets the item. I don't care if the person shows up with 2 left hands and a neanderthal's mechanical aptitude, the money is exchanged for the item and that's that.
Really, there comes a time to turn away and leave the car to its fate.
Besides, I dare say that the salvage company that ends up with the car will almost certainly end up selling the parts to people as deserving of the parts as anyone that shows up at your door.
I visited my poor 99 at the dismantler to retrieve my license plate and the hood crest that is my avatar picture. I'm not sure that people who think about parting out a car have a sense of what it looks like to do so. Or the array of tools and storage boxes and inventory systems needed to do so in any kind of efficient manner. It's one thing to pull the passenger side mirror wiring harness and have it available. But where are you keeping it so that you can find it when the buyer who desperately needs one finally contacts you in 2021 with the $12.54 he's willing to pay for it?
Can't believe no one has asked for the luggage/wallet/keychain yet... come on guys! Put me first in the queue for that please! You can sell these no matter which route you take!
Very sorry to hear , but as others have said, glad you're ok. Did you like it enough to want to look for a replacement , or are you going to move on ? These cars are so rewarding to drive, that it's hard to replace them if you're going to stay within the price range.
I just drove a friend's new to him 2014 ZO6, it's a nice car...but there's no way in hell I would swap my C4S for it.
Here's to better days....

May end up getting another 996. My initial search took forever and the most daunting part about the whole situation is the thought of starting another search...
I could use a driver's side seat-adjustment switch assembly.
[Sheesh, we're parting his car out from under him before he's even heard from his insurance agent. Vultures we are.]
I've always felt the search is half the fun! Heck even when I'm not in the market I'm still searching.
Sorry to hear of the circumstances precipitating this possible search, but you might as well make the best of the situation and try to enjoy it...
Easy fix

would need some bits of the manual transmission
*clutch line from pedal to slave cylinder
*slave cylinder
*clutch release fork
*center console tray/bracket around the radio
*frame strip without buttons around the radio
*maybe instrument cluster
maybe some pics of the interior etc (before car was wrecked)
yeah yeah that is what I meant - idea was to point the region in the car
here is a diagram (hope it is visible)
if someone else can offer these things would be grateful for info, PM or here thanks
Macster has inspired me to change my approach and sell it complete as-is. Thanks for the interest in the parts, I wish I had the time to take her apart...
